TCNJ vs. Rutgers for Business

edited April 2012 in Rutgers University
I plan on majoring in either Accounting and/or Finance. I've already been accepted to Rutgers NB, and I'm waiting on TCNJ. If accepted, I'm torn between the two. I know TCNJ is now ranked higher for undergrad. but I imagine Rutgers still has more name value.

I think it really depends on which type of school you prefer. They are both different schools one is a small liberal artish public while the other is a huge state flagship. I know many people at both schools and TCNJ seems to be the more selective university although it fairly new so it doesnt have the national prestige that it deserves. Rutgers has the name brand that you would want for business school but I am sure TCNJ will open up similar doors for you if you do well.

Rutgers Business school is much more well-known than TCNJ

I'm dying to know the answer to this question.....I got into RBS, Penn State-Smeal, and waiting on TCNJ. Which of the three has the best business program?

If you got into Penn State Smeal go there. Its the best out of the three.

I would rank them as Penn State, Rutgers, then TCNJ. I got into smeal and RBS and ended up at Rutgers due to money and have loved it here so far. If you got into Smeal then there's a good chance you will get into Rutgers Honors Program as well.

TCNJ because the rank is going to increase in the coming years.

@brotherly love...you really think admission to Smeal means I may get Rutgers Honors? I didn't think Smeal was that competitive of a business school.

Rutgers has far more presige and name recognition in the business world than TCNJ and possibly Penn State. (full disclosure - MBA Rutgers-Newark!)

Rutgers obviously has more name recognition, but since TCNJ is smaller you might have a better chance of standing out (big fish, small pond vs avg fish in big pond)

You must visit, overnight if possible. The campuses are probably 2 different worlds. S2 transferred from small LAC to Rowan because he hated the small campus. While at admissions one day the sec'y asked me if I was the one she'd talked to whose son was transferring from Rutgers. I wondered why someone would transfer Rutgers to Rowan and she said maybe it was too big, too city. It hadn't occurred to me that someone would find a school too big because I was dealing with a school too small. My point is that you have to be comfortable. If you are unhappy for 4 years.....Also I wonder if Rutgers has more larger lecture classes. They might have a good faculty ratio, but that doesn't mean they don't have large lectures and tiny high high level classes.

Rowan doesn't have large lectures and I'd expect TCNJ to be similar based on size.

smeal is one of the more highly regarded business schools in the country. I got in there but money kept me from going. I'm in the business school here and I have no regrets. The business school here is definitely more well known than TCNJ but that's because Rutgers is such a big school and has been well established (especially Newark's business program) for a long time. If money is not an issue for you I would definitely go to Smeal, and yes if you got into Smeal there is a VERY high chance that you will get into Rutgers Honors. If you are choosing between TCNJ and RU, the choice pretty much boils down to are you more comfortable at a very small, mostly liberal arts/engineering college or a huge state school with tons of people
