Retake SAT math 2

ImperialChimpImperialChimp Registered User Posts: 33 Junior Member
I just got back my math 2 score and it was a 740. I was quite disappointed, especially since I got 770+ on my practices. Should I bother to retake it if I'm applying to colleges like northwestern, brown, columbia, and yale (my reach schools)? I dont have any fee waivers left so I'm reluctant to pay for another test, especially with the late fee. I honestly dont want to take the test again but may if I have to.

What is your planned major? What was your SAT/ACT math score?

I'm sort of undecided but the closest would be in either philosophy anf/or chemistry. SAT was a 1440 with a 720 in math and r&w. I'm also applied for questbridge and finalized, if that helps. I plan to take either the SAT or ACT in December unless I get matched (unlikely).

Those are great scores and your low-income status surely helps your cause, whether or not you are matched via Questbridge. The M2 score is respectable on it's own and strengthens the SAT Math score. You are planning a humanities major (potentially) so these scores can only help. Even for a STEM major, they are good scores so won't hurt. I'd submit but have backups for your reaches (which would apply even if you pulled a 770). Retaking SAT/ACT sounds like the better idea because the schools put more weight on those scores. However, only retake if you truly think you can improve your score and keep in mind that Yale at the very least will want to see all your SAT or ACT scores.

My son is in the same boat with a 740 M2 and applications to several tippy-tops. He's resting on that score because he feels it's likely "good enough" for what he wants to do. Hopefully he's right!

You sound like a very interesting person who might be drawn to a top liberal arts program. Good luck to you!

Those are great scores, and I would not be worried. Your aps should be in by now, so sit back, enjoy the ride, and don't stress!

One other thing to keep in mind in addition to the above comments is that SAT2 Subject Test scores play a much smaller role in your application than other portions such as SAT1, GPA, Ec's, and essays.
