Khan Academy SAT prep

RockyPARockyPA 53 replies6 threads Junior Member
My daughter is planning on taking the SAT in October so she signed up for the Khan Academy test prep thru the College Board. She just took her first practice test and scored a 1560 (780 both sections). Just wondering how much these tests generally predict actual SAT test results. Thanks!

I guess that is good news then! Thanks for the reply. She has another month to keep practicing: she is hoping to bring up her math score.

Thanks! She took another one this morning, this time one on paper using the official College Board SAT practice book. She got a 1580 ( 790 each). Hopefully she will do as well on actual test next month

DS used KhanAcademy and consistently did the exams without missing questions but on test day scored 800/750 in math/ebrw. A bit disappointed but he will not take the SAT again as the 1550 is good enough. In our experience actual test scores tend to be a bit lower...not sure if it is test anxiety or what. In any case, both the SAT/ACT have a very low ceiling, hopefully colleges will be more interested in his AIME scores.

    Good luck!

These practice test are actual practice tests from College Board which are helpful. However, since you are doing this online I would recommend getting your daughter to take the practice SAT on printed papers. Me, my older sister, younger sister, and younger brother did this and it helped a lot.

Hi! She actually took the SAT in October and got a 1570 (790 math and 780 ebrw), so the practice tests are indeed accurate. She was hoping for an 800 in math but made a silly mistake; her first impulse was to retake but I think she is done.

I would say that practice tests are good indicators of the general range of scores, though actual results tend to be slightly lower, on average. The pressure of a real test on a real test day in a different environment. seems to have a bit of an impact, especially for the first test. Nothing more than 10-30 points though, IME.

This result looks to be consistent with that.

Don't retake, it will barely improve her app but there will be so much time wasted that could be put towards grades/college essays.

Congrats! Khan Academy is definitely a great indicator of where your child is at. Consistency is key.

We had a similar experience. My son did nothing but the free Khan academy and the results of test were very close (slightly under) his actuals. I think its a great program/service they offer considering the sizable expense I have heard others incur with tutoring.

I agree with the others. Even though Khan Academy might seem too easy compared to other prep books, it's much closer to official tests (especially in maths).
