SAT II in June or October?

Our son is a junior. He took the ACT as a sophomore and again this April (no new results yet). He will take the SAT tomorrow--and attend the prom tomorrow night. (Quite the day!)

He has an IB History test in May and a 30-minute movie for his TAG Language Arts class due by May 15. Throw in other end-of-the-year activities and competitions and as you know, life is chaotic.

For at least one of the schools on his list, he will need to take a math and science SAT II. The deadline for registering for the June tests is May 5. We can't decide whether he should take them in June or wait until October.

As a mom, I think one more stressful thing in the next few weeks will put all of us over the edge. I'm leaning toward taking the summer for him to review and do practice tests.

FYI: He is taking IB Math HL this year and next. Honors genetics and mircobiology this year; IB or AP chemistry and physics next year.

What does the CC audience think is best? June or October?

I recommend June since he's taking both a math class and science class so the info is fresh in his mind. But if he plans to study/review during the summer for the October test, that'll work too. One more advantage of taking it in June, if he doesn't like the scores, he'll have another chance to take them again.

Take in October with a few weeks of prep.

If he is applying ED or EA, will the timing of results from October become an issue?

Unfortunately, this is just a stressful time for Juniors! Personally, I would recommend June for the math at least. Will the genetics and microbiology class prepare him for the Biology SATII? If he waited till October, which science SAT II would he take? He won't be very far along in the Chemistry or Physics class, so it would probably require some significant studying on his part. Will he actually review and prep over the summer? My son would promise he would do so, and then would not. If your son would actually study, and you don't think you need the October test date to retake the SATs, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad to wait. For my son, I would rather he just get it over with.
