What does it mean to be commended for the PSAT?

My principal told me today that I was commended for my PSAT scores, does it just mean I've gained recognition? They also mentioned something about sending scores to colleges... do colleges actually recognize you for PSAT scores? I didn't realize they were that important.

They aren't that important and 'commended' status is almost negligible in college admissions. If you scored really high though, some schools such as Alabama offer scholarships for National merit finalists/winners.

Commended means you are top 50,000 out of 1.5 Million - Congrats!
In Sept. you will know if you move on in the Natl. Merit Competition...
you can probably guess according to your score. Each State has it's own
cutoff ranging from 203 - 223 +. Those that meet that cut off
will move on, the rest are "Commended". There are other threads, 3 or 4,
that detail these cut off point scores for each state. Maybe you can
    look under the SAT Forum.
Choose your 2 Colleges carefully, you may qualify for $$ - even if
it's not Natl. Merit Scholar $$.

NMSCC wording " The colleges and universities you report to us should be two regionally accredited instititutions in the US that you would seriously consider atending and that you believe may be interested in you. ( Neither will be informed of the other.) On the website, you can choose from a listing of about 2300 US colleges & unis. Also, the college major shown on the website is the one you coded on your PSAT answer sheet last Oct....

Although not all colleges will act upon the reports about high scoring participants that NMSC will send to them, many will. In the past, many students using this service have been contacted by college officials about educational opportunities available at their institutions."

ldavis - wait, does that mean that sending my scores to those two colleges basically just signs me up for their newsletters, more or less?
