Know definitions, but not being able to use it in real life

Hi, I have been wondering about this for a long time. First of all, English is not my first language.....I memorized thousands of SAT words from last year until now, and I still remember all the definitions. However, I just can't use it in real life. For example; when I write I can only use simple words, but not able to recall the sophisticated ones I memorized.

Am I the only one here?
