What are SAT subject tests?

ind3fatigableind3fatigable 0 replies2 threads New Member
I was reading online about people that took SAT subject tests like Physics, Math II, and Chemistry. How many more subject tests exist? Could one self study and prepare for it? Do colleges require this?

A few colleges require them. Many recommend them. Check each college's website.

A lot, yes, and mostly, in that order. Also only take the ones relevant to your major.

I would disagree that colleges “mostly” require them.

Last I saw, they were required by <10 schools, recommended by about 10, and listed as “considered” by fewer than 100.

Out of 4-5,000 colleges in the U.S., depending on your source.

Unsurprisingly, Wikipedia has a better overview than CB’s site.

I have tried to respond to this post, but the CC filter does not like the URL [a competitor?] I posted, so I will simply suggest that you do a search for SAT subject tests. You will find any number of sites and analyses and information about which colleges want/recommend/will consider/don't care. I would not accept either #1 or #3 on this thread as definitive. Wish I could be more precise, but CC apparently will not let me.

In my experience, I've fared better taking SAT subject tests for exams that I've taken AP classes for.
E.g: APUSH and the US History SAT exam

While your AP classes won't cover ALL the material on the SAT subject test, you'll still have a lot of background covered when you study specifically for these subject tests.
