University of Melbourne vs University of Sydney

Hi all!
I'm currently studying in NYC, but I really want to study abroad at either USyd or U Melb. They are both very good schools, so thats not an issue, but I am more of a mathematics/statistics/actuarial science person - so which school do you think is better for this subject area?

I also want to enjoy - meet people, explore the city, visit beaches... I'm not much of a drinker/bar person, but I love dancing/clubs.

Being in NYC, I really want a change from the cut-throat, high-intensity lifestyle of the city. I want an experience that's more laid back and a relaxing environment and pretty school.

I'm not really an artsy/hipster person if that matters (I hear Melbourne is pretty artsy).

So, College Confidential, my question to you is this - WHERE SHOULD I STUDY ABROAD?
Thanks :)

Sydney is much better for beaches (and to an extent, weather) than Melbourne.

Melbourne is pretty artsy and is regarded as the cultural capital of Australia. All of that said, it's a large city so you'll be able to find plenty of people who aren't artsy if you go there. Sydney has a much bigger beach culture than Melbourne.

I would say that Melbourne has the edge academically. Melbourne has what's probably Australia's best business school (with the possible exception of UNSW), and is generally better at the physical sciences than USyd. I don't know if you'd feel the difference though.

If you want to know more about the universities, feel free to message me. I received full scholarships at both UniMelb and USyd for undergrad, so I considered both universities very seriously. I ultimately decided to go elsewhere, but I have a lot of friends at each place.

I studied abroad through my home uni right down the road from Sydney Uni-great area and culture.

I'm not Australian so I can't tell you much about the academics, but I had an absolutely phenomenal time in Sydney! I've been to Melbourne as well, but its definitely more artsy.
