Are you an international student studying in the US on a student visa?

First you need to understand what your visa allows you to do. The foreign student office at your university should be able to tell you. In most cases that I am aware of having a student visa does NOT allow you to work off campus. 40 years ago students in the US on a student visa could work on-campus, but I don't know whether this is still true. I have heard that the situation has changed in terms of getting a social security card, and I am not sure whether you can work without one (I sort of doubt it).

Check with your school's foreign student office.
