    @bbq5ue What tips would you give to people applying to MITES?
  • bbq5uebbq5ue Registered User Posts: 68 Junior Member
    Don't be discouraged if u don't think you'll get in bc or scores or stats (I didn't have that great of stats so was pretty convinced I wasn't gonna get in). Just be yourself in your essays. I really believe that if you are passionate about stem and the things you do, it will shine through in your essays. They really know how to pick an amazing group (no joke all of them were some of the smartest and most passionate people I've met) if y'all have anything else ur curious abt dm me

    @PhysicsIsNotPhun

    Stats: relatively low for MITES, improve that SAT score and you should be fine. Also consider taking Math II subject test and a science subject test.
    ECs: Although they stand out, there is no internship / research experience at all, which is what MITES loves to see. Other than that, looks fairly good.
    Awards: None listed, hopefully you have some...

    Are you a minority: african american, hispanic, girl, pacific islander?
    Without being a minority, I would say it is near impossible to get in.

    @GoBears2023 Ooo I forgot to put in that stuff

    SAT Subjects: I only took one so far (Math I: 730) - Probably really weak but I'm taking Math II and Physics this year

    Work Experience: My coding assistant is technically a internship (no pay but considered a worker by manager)

    Awards: I'm not even sure these count (Order of "impressiveness")
    - My workplace national coding tournament 6th place nationally ranked
    - All Conference Winter Track
    - All State Cello Player
    - All County Cello Player
    - FTC Qualifier 1st place winner
    - Some local tournaments Forensics awards

    Those are my "official big awards". I'm not sure if some of them count as awards?

    If you want to count elementary + middle school awards
    - Valedictorian of elementary school (clap clap)
    - Chamber Music Teacher's Award
    - Mathematics Teacher's Award

    Also I'm pretty sure bigger awards are given out AFTER junior year?

    Research: I should have done some, but I have none (I focus on creating the app for my school, websites for multiple clubs, and making apps for small companies)

    @PhysicsIsNotPhun

    SAT Subject Tests: You need high subject scores in order to prove your competency
    Work experience: Write about it!
    Awards: Fairly average, FTC is not as good as FRC due to age range, Coding Tournament (Which one is it, is it well known?) NO, bigger awards can be achieved at any point in high school such as olympiads or hackathon competitions or science fair wins. Before high school awards don't help.

    Race: Are you a minority?

    My chance is still the same

    @GoBears2023 Would being a low income south asian immigrant have the same weight as a minority?
  • GoBears2023GoBears2023 Forum Champion Summer Programs Posts: 635 Forum Champion
    @TheMadScientistX Unfortunately no. However, if you can talk about how you overcame barriers caused by your low income, it may be able to be close to being a minority!

    @EESSLL

    I would be really surprised if they didn't take you. Awards are on point and the ECs are great, not to mention perfect stats!

    Hey! I got into and attended MITES last year.

    @PhysicsIsNotPhun So subject scores are not considered in your MITES application. Also, your SAT is perfectly fine! I got in with a 1400 on my PSAT. Also, people got in with lower scores. (my friend got in with a 1340).
    @GoBears2023 Where did you get the information that MITES wants to see research and interships? Some people did come in with that, but many (including me) did not.

    Also MITES is more of an opportunity for people who do not have these resources.

    Also, If y'all make an applicants gc, I'd love to join it!

    Hi ! I’m Alexa and I’m MITES ‘18. @PhysicsIsNotPhun many of my stats were a lot lower than yours, such as my SAT score and I got in. Honestly, there is no fit standard that students must meet to get in, but I definitely believe everyone who got in deserved to be there. So just trust the process, believe in yourself and try your best. And if you ever need anything, me and @CoolChem are there for you !!
