Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) 2019

LilGrinchLilGrinch 1 replies1 threadsRegistered User New Member
Hi

I haven’t seen a thread for 2019 yet (sorry if there is!) so I’m starting one. How is everyone getting on with their essays? And is it worth it to go up to the word limit or is less okay?

These are my stats and am applying to the sustainable economics program. Not sure how competitive I am

    PSAT: 1520/1520
    GPA: 3.92
College Courses: Number Theory, Multivariable Differential Calculus, Linear Algebra, Diff Eq (A in all of these and submitting transcripts)

    ECs:

    1. Working on a research paper as a hired research contributor for UC Davis's graduate school. I am devising a methodology to quantify the social impact generated by investment in private equity funds and creating dollar for dollar social entrepreneurship metric for investors. The professor is writing a rec for me as well.

    2. Interned at a mutual fund over the summer where I publish ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reports to ESG integrate the entire funds' portfolio. I also built this analytical model (a bit too complex to explain here) which saves hours of data collection and quickly quantifies these factors.

    3. Captain of the squash team and coach.

    4. Data research assistant to this professor at Carnegie Mellon and compiled a national database for his working paper on the market externalities.

Hi! Yeah, I'm also applying to the YYGS 2019. My Stats aren't that impressive either. I mean yeah I have a 3.95 unweighted and 4.10 weighted GPA with my AP classes. But, I have a 25 on my ACT and 1040 on my PSAT. Not the best... especially as a junior but my ACT was my first one and I'm planning on retaking it again. What I like though is my English stats are really high (34 in English) and I have my Subject test score for U.S History which was 750 since I'm applying to the LPC program (Literature Philosophy and Culture). It's all I'm applying to because that's the one program I genuinely want to take. I'm just being honest with my test scores because what the heck. My extracurriculars though, I'm crossing my fingers. I basically said
-Creative Writing Club (Co-President)/Started and in charge of Creative Literary Magazine at my school (Co-Leader)
-Traditionally published a Book I worked on for 3+ years (Author)
and my last one was a cultural event I participate in. I play violin duets with my sister for the events or for renowned people in my culture (ex: chief). Despite my stats, I'm really hoping I get in.

As for the essays I managed to finish all of them. I got everything in except I'm waiting for my last teacher recommendation. Afterward, I'm pressing the submit button and crossing my fingers. As for your question in terms of wordcount, they won't let you go over. And even if they did, I highly recommend you don't go over. Just stick to it and you should be fine ^_^

Honestly submit them. For YYGS the grades are way more important than the test scores. Some people don’t even submit their test scores and still get in.

i'm applying to the PLE program but my stats aren't that great--

    PSAT: 1500/1520
    GPA: UW: 3.85; W: 4.1

the biggest issue is that i got a C in calc bc and a B in ap bio first semester this year; how badly does that impact my chances of getting in?

    @enaword I wouldn’t say not that much.

LOL I think a lot of us are stressing too much about our stats. Yes they help but what they’re looking at most are the Essays and The Teacher Recs. The grades come in later and lastly the testscores. YYGS is a program met for learning anyways and the courses aren’t even graded either. Not that I’m saying grades aren’t important because they are. They help the officiers determine how well you’ll do in the program course wise but it won’t drastically hurt you, unlike if you were applying to the actual school. I say you should still apply and see what happens.

I applied and got into IAS (Which has apparently been rebranded as something else) and I really loved the experience.

In the application, I put PLE first choice, then put IAS as both my second and third choice lol, and also I didn't have SAT scores to submit back then. But my grades were pretty good (Perfect grades) and I got really good recs from my history teacher who loves me and another teacher who is my housemaster (I go to boarding school in the UK).

    Here are my ECs
-Worked for a Legislator in Hong Kong the previous summer and got a really good rec from him
    -Football (Soccer) team captain
-Worked as homework club helper for the local primary school for a year
    -Grade 8 Piano
That was about it for my ECs actually. But I did have a load of academic awards for maths and social sciences etc. that looked quite impressive.

For my essay, I talked about my experience living in two different countries and how the education system and political climate of these two countries shaped me and I guess they liked it.

For the courses, whilst they aren't graded, they do write comments that go with your future application, so if you do get in, you definitely need to be in top form.

Is it recommended that we submit a resume? I know that it's optional but idk if it will help.

I applied to the Literature, Philosophy and culture session of YYGS as an international IB student from Jordan with very good grades (not straight A's though but most my A's are in humanities and language), and did phenomenally in the essays section (Im a very creative & excellent writer). I also wrote a very good financial need-statement and uploaded two evidences of family income. As for my activities i have a lott and one of the major ones( won second place in an international debate competition in India, organizing MUN, internship at health center). What chance do I have at getting accepted with financial aid??
