TRANSFER to New PALTZ - what are my chances?

shadedskyshadedsky Registered User Posts: 6 New Member
edited February 2009 in SUNY - General

I applied to transfer to suny New Paltz for the fall 2009 semester.
I would be going for the BFA graphic design degree.

I would be entering as a sophomore

My high school grades averaged out to be around an 87-89%
and I was 400/621 in my graduating class :X

I'm not good with testing which leads to my 960/1600 for my SAT grade

however I have a excellent portfolio and my essays are great.
(many people have told me so)

and my first semester grades equal out to a 3.06 gpa
and I'm hoping to get at least a 3.5 gpa for the spring semester.

Do you think that they will base a lot of my acceptance on my high school grades?
or more on my college?

what are my chances into transferring New Paltz?!

Let me know! thanks!

well your high school stats are pretty low for NP, but your college work is good. I think depending on how much of high school they take into account, you have a slight chance. Good luck!

you have a very small chance... they will still take your high school stats (gpa and sats) into account since you haven't completed at least 24 credit hours yet at another college. They really can't make a decision by just seeing one semester's worth of grades at college

It doesn't hurt to try. You'll have a much better chance if you transfer after your sophomore year. When transferring during your freshman year, colleges will still place quite a bit of emphasis on your high school stats (including SAT/ACT). After your sophomore year, they'll put more emphasis on your college records.

Suggestion: give it a try but if you don't get in, don't be discouraged. Continue bringing up your college gpa and try again for the following year.

    Good luck.

correction: ALL emphasis will be put on college stats after 24 credits.

now i'm going to be entering with 33 credits though... or do they only look at what i have completed?

They look at what you've completed. In other words, assuming that you applied for a transfer for Fall 2009, only your completed Fall 2008 college classes are considered (along with your high school stats and SAT). If you apply for a transfer for Spring 2010, then your Fall 2008 AND your completed Spring 2009 college classes will be considered.

Do any of you recommend anything i could do extra to give them a push?

Maybe you should call New Paltz admissions and speak with them directly. Before you call, practice what you're going to say. Show interest and a desire and emphasize your upward trend in your current college. You could ask if an interview and presentation of your portfolio will help you to gain admission for the fall.

Hi! I'm also looking to transfer to New Paltz for the Fall 09 semester. I'm currently undecided but I applied as an international relations major.
I'm currently at the University of Rhode Island, I ended the fall semester with a 3.61 gpa, made the Dean's List, and was invited into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars based upon my gpa and being in the top 20 percent of my class and was also invited to Phi Eta Sigma, an honor society for freshman.
From here, it goes down a little, I did much better in college than I did in high school, I'm not sure what my class rank was as my school didn't release that information. I took mostly advanced level courses, except in math and science and took AP classes senior year. My sat scores were not that great, my highest was a 590 critical reading and 460 math.
I'm hoping that my work in college can overshadow my performance in high school? What do you think my chances are?

Your high school stats will take priority over one semester of college. If you don't get in this time, try again for either the Spring 2010 or Fall 2010 when more emphasis will be placed on your college stats.

Rachiee - I think you have a shot. What was your HS gpa? Your college gpa is great. Hopefully that will carry you through.

I'm not entirely sure but I think it was somewhere around 3 - 3.3. It fluctuated a lot actually, I don't really remember what it was at the end of my senior year. I'm hoping that what I did last semester will be good enough to help me squeeze by.
