This is a great point, and thank you for sharing your personal experience with it. Not to get too far afield but it reminds me of conversations around the SAT/ACT I used to have years ago and the addictive quality of higher scores. That originally they were often used to assess who could meet the standard to do the work at the school. But then there started to be creep that overvalued top scores compared to other important qualities in holistic admissions amongst folks who were well above the threshold needed to show the student was good enough.
