This is my feeling also.
One daughter had an acquaintance (someone she did not know well, but they were on a sports team together) who had a similar situation in terms of a rough freshman year and who did relatively well in college/university admissions – significantly better than the acquaintance had expected. The acquaintance was quite happy where she ended up but I do not fully recall the details.
I think that good results in sophomore and junior years will help quite a bit. Some schools will look at mid term senior years grades and some will not, but doing well in senior year will nonetheless also help in other ways such as getting ready to do well in university.
And yes there are some schools who do not even look at freshman year grades.
