Anyone looking at day schools?

There is a thread somewhere in this section about private school applicants-find it, if it was not deleted.

Yup. The problem is that it deals pretty much exclusively with boarding schools.

What are boarding schools and prep schools I hear CCer’s talk about?

If you’re asking about definitions-Private (also called “independent”) high schools. The word “prep” come from the the fact that they were traditionally “college preparatory” schools. Pretty much all boarding schools are prep schools, but not all prep schools are boarding. The usual divisions are 7 day boarding (students live at school and go home only on vacation), 5 day boarding (students go home every weekend), and day schools (students commute to school each day). Many schools have a combination of day, 5 day boarding and 7 day boarding.

A question to start the discussion- How far are you willing to commute to a great school? If you do commute, how do feel about the tradeoffs (eg, loss of neighborhood friends, excessive time stuck in traffic)?
