Essay Questionmnnnnmnmn

How strict is Columbia about essay length? Is it ok if mine is a little over 650 words, or should I submit a 500 word one to be safe?

Anyone else submitting a behemoth essay?

hahaha not to Columbia, but I submitted a 1100 word essay to Brown! I tried all different ways to make mine shorter but keep it good and none of them worked. In the end I decided to just send it and hope for the best. Mine is definitely behemoth - I’d say 650 is probably fine

Get it under 600… 650 seems a little long.

As others have said, if you cut your essay and it loses the “personal qualitities” or some meaning–leave it as it is. However, IF you can cut it without its losing its effect, go for the shorter version. Personally, mine’s really, really long–much longer than yours (and I’ve already submitted it). I really hope it won’t be an automatic rejection for me. Nervous…

Tbone

tbone, how long? I didn’t think anyone would beat 1100

Thanks for the feedback  I guess I’ll try to cut it down to closer to 600. If possible. It’s just, I have the choice between this long essay which I really, really like, and a shorter essay that is good but I don’t think is as good.

carmel - I sure hope that essay moves people to tears (in a good way).

it really is long as f u c k, haha. I don’t know, I loved it so much I really couldn’t bear to do anything to it. sometimes you just gotta go with your heart nah mean

sho nuff

submitted!

mines around 600

Mine’s 470 =P But 2 pages…I mostly talked about my interest in writing and literature and put in a poem I wrote too…I hope the admission officer appreciates my style…=S

cool. I rocked da chaismus like there was no tomorrow… I think i might have ripped of emerson on the last one, but i’m too tired to check

ARRRgh! I submitted my Columbia app with my usual common app essay, and then I spent the rest of the night revising a different essay to use for U of C, and it turned out waaaaay better than the common app essay!! TGHRHGR wish I had submitted it to columbia bleh

^ I hate it when that happens
