Hate to do this: what colleges match this?

<p>I have my top choices picked and some good back-ups, but the problem is 3 out of my 4 colleges are in-state, which i hate. So…</p>

<p>Name me a college around the difficulty of acceptance to say…the University of Rochester (so like #20-#50 on US News) that is:

  1. NOT in new york state
  2. Preferably private (for the aid)
  3. <strong>Stronger in sciences than in humanities (but NO technical schools like RPI or Purdue)
  4. **</strong>Has a strong music program (school or departmental, whatever)</p>

<p>Does Brandeis fit this?</p>

<p>Bonus points if you pick one that has a nice social scene, too. (Yes, I am a sinner).</p>

<p>Indiana has VERY good music, as does UMiami</p>

<p>Eh…i kinda don’t like the urban-ness at boston, and isn’t CMU kind of an engineering school, too?</p>

<p>So is brandeis humanities or sciences??</p>

<p>Vanderbilt, maybe? I’m throwing out a guess, although that may be too high up there…</p>

<p>If you do some research you’ll quickly find Engineering is what CMU is ranked lower for (Business, CS and Drama are all unsurpassed or at the very top). Newsweek quotes the Tepper Business School as overlapping with Wharton. CS has been repeatedly #1 and is receiving a lot of money (Gates building, Google professor). CMU arts/music/drama is only surpassed by Juilliard and overlaps/surpasses Tisch. </p>

<p>Frankly, Engineering was the strong point and is tied or ranked above the likes of Cornell (forgot the rankings for engineering) but contemporary Carnegie Mellon is a medley of top programs and majors. That isn’t to mention the notorious job networking and recruiter ratings (repeated job rankings such as Newsweek’s Hottest College for a Job and Princeton Review’s old Career College).</p>

<p>Clen, Lawrence University…Sciences, Music conservatory, nice social scene, everyone lives on campus, private with great financial aid, almost 50/50 men and women, & in the great state of Wisconsin with an airport 15 minutes from campus with links through Chicago or Minneapolis to the world.</p>

<p>Well, i know cmu is more than engineering, but what i meant was they don’t seem like a liberal arts school. I was kind of thinking along the lines of princeton or cornell arts and sciences, which are more liberal arts schools than anything.</p>

<p>I will check out Lawrence and Miami, i guess. Any other suggestions?</p>

<p>Right, CMU isn’t known for liberal arts though they do/did have #1 Creative Writing and Cognitive Psych. CMU places very well concerning grad schools as well as top jobs no matter what major. Also the liberal arts school might even be a match/small reach for you depending on your stats.</p>

<p>Is Oberlin more sciences or humanities??</p>
