How long do I have to decide where I'm going?

I still have to visit a few of my potential schools (Chicago, Cornell, Wash U) that are far away from my home state. To cut back on travel costs (bad economy right?) I feel like it would be more cost-effective to just visit the colleges I get into to.

The universal reply date is May 1st. This means that you must have notified your college of choice by that date, and told the other universities that accepted you that you do not intend to enroll.

I’m in a similar situation, with a few schools that I like being too far away to warrant the expense of the visit without an acceptance letter. Some schools take into account whether or not you’ve visited campus (or expressed interest in some other way) in their decisions, so it’s really too bad. I guess all you can do is try to express interest in other ways (come to see their reps when they travel near you, get on the mailing list, etc) and hope they understand.

Also, visiting could also obviously save you a little money if you visit and decide that you hate the school once you’ve been there in real life.
