I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogony.

Anchorman finally being on HBO = diminished chance of me getting any summer reading or college essays done in the near future…

**Prospective Schools:/b
Reach - Stanford, Yale, UPenn Wharton, Dartmouth
Match - Rice, Duke, Northwestern, Washington University in St. Louis
Safety – University of Kansas, Kansas State

Potential Major: Not sure, but it’ll be something in the social sciences, like Economics.

Type of school I’m looking for: Solid academic reputation, good job placement, good alumni network. Active student population that participates in clubs, intramurals, etc. and not just academics. Preferably suburban or rural, although being urban isn’t a big detractor. Good reputation for significant merit-based aid and low tuition (read: Rice) would be a plus. Geographical location doesn’t matter that much, but I’d prefer mild weather (like Duke, WashU, Stanford) over somewhere like Cornell.

Chances at the above schools, and any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

You hace a great shot at all the schools on your list. I suggest that you pick a couple schools in b/w WashU & U Kansas. While it is highly unlikely that you are rejected from all your reaches/matches, it would be a terrible shame if you ended up at UKansas. WashU also has a huge reputation of rejecting overqualified candidates.

That being said, I would definitely look at University of Michigan as a fairly sure safety (w/ rolling admissions, you’ll know that you’re in for sure). Another solid safety economics choice would be Boston University. You mentioned merit aid, and you would be a highly qualified candidate for full tuition if that interests you.

Other than what I have mentioned, you have a good, reasonable list and everything is lined up in the right categories.

I hope you don’t think I’m bringing you down. You have an excellent chance at all of your reaches. But better safe than sorry, right? :)

Thanks, and I agree, I do need some safer matches. Those schools, however, seem rather difficult to come by. I’ll definitely look into BU.

BTW, a requisite of my “safety” schools is financial safety as well - I would like to get a good-sized, if not full, scholarship to any school I’d consider a safety.

Looks like a great list to me- it’s nice to finally see one that’s well put together!

stambliark, KU is a great school with solid social sciences programs. I know JimmyEatWorld is overqualified, but so are a lot of people at that school. It’s a great safety.

Snob.

i would just like to applaud you on the title of the post.

when’s anchorman on hbo

oh, and apparently not enough are “overqualified” because admissions isn’t very selective there. I agree with stambliark. KU is still a good school though, dont get me wrong.

I spent 3 weeks this summer at KU for debate camp, and I really like the campus. The scenery and buildings are actually pretty nice, and it happens to be built on the only hill in all of Kansas. =\ It may not be a selective university, but that doesn’t mean the education there sucks.

The main issue I have with it is, KU’s job placement niche seems to be mainly in Kansas and the few surrounding states, and I’d prefer someplace with more…opportunity?

In any case, it’s a safety school that I’ll definitely be applying to (I got a 232 PSAT, and according to local rumors most people who get National Merit get full rides to KU). But in the mean time I’m still looking for others as well…

lionswim, there is nothing wrong w/ KU. However, the OP has worked extremely hard all throughout HS…he deserves better than UKansas, and I was merely trying to suggest some other safety alternatives that he might be more happy w/.

I would hope that we agree that there is a very large margin b/w WashU St. Louis & UKansas. I just felt it was a gap that should be addressed. Certainly BU & UMichigan are better safety alternatives, so why not mention it?

And I swear I’m not a snob! :)

Oh there’s definitely a big difference between Wash and KU, no doubt. I just don’t like the notion that because Kansas is a nowhere state that University of Kansas is a nowhere school. JimmyEat’s comment about the job niche was pretty right on, though.

And I’d also say that K-State is a big step below KU, unless you’re an ag major.

How about Tulane? Mild climate, interesting city, nice campus, good academics, and GREAT merit aid. There’s also a wonderful honors program with an honors dorm, special classes, etc.

JimmyEatWorld: haha… that is delightful. Anchorman is one of the funniest movies of all time. BTW I think you’ll probably get into any school you apply to… u have awesome stats and an impecable taste in movies…

You know, what are you asking for? You’re absolutely right with the list you created yourself. Your GPA and testing is top knotch. Your ECs, while impressive, are what every other Asian is doing. Good luck!

Haha, but what ECs aren’t Asians doing nowadays?

You know, besides contact sports and manual labor.

you have a good sense of humor and personality. hope it comes out in your essays.

Knights of Columbus, that’s an impressive resume!

I want to say something, want to put it out there. if you like it, you can take it, and if you don’t, send it right back. I want to be on you. Wait…
… I immediately regret this decision.

I ate a big red candle.

I would use UNC as a match/ safety, your stats will get you in and its a pretty awesome school.
