<p>I was wondering about using laptops in classes at NYU. I’m assuming that most people at NYU use them regardless, but I’m wondering whether or not it is common to use them in classes. I really want to be able to use mine, and it would really help with note-taking, but does anyone know if laptops in classes at NYU is common, or would I just be the class noise-maker?</p>
<p>Almost everyone at NYU has a laptop but very, very few ever use them in class. In most of my classes, yes, you would just be the class noisemaker and it wouldn’t be appreciated, trust me.</p>

<p>I suspect, that as long as you have the sound turned down, it wouldn’t matter much. I don’t bring mine to class, only because its heavy and I don’t feel like lugging it everywhere, an old fashion notebook suffices.</p>
<p>if someone tells me that the noise of my typing is distracting them, i’ll just tell them to **** off. you’d have to be REALLY neurotic to find the noise of someone typing “distracting”. im not using a pen, but i aint complaining when they’re frantically scribbling, turning pages, tearing pages out or swearing cos they’ve run out of space, let alone asking to borrow some more paper/ink/pencil sharpener/rubber/ruler. i dunno, we could have a massive debate over what is louder, but seriously, if people actually complain…they’re just anal.</p>

<p>tapping a keyboard and blaring an air-horn is a different matter. you want to be sarcastic? Then get off your high-horse. a slight irritation and something that actually hinders your studies are completely different things. it would hinder my studies if i had to use a pen. i stand by my statement. the sound of typing is not a distraction, and anyone who complains is a neurotic person - ie, straining their ears, waiting, for the sound of a space bar.</p>
<p>it depends on the sound of the keys. my dads crappy acer laptop is loud when you type. my 15" powerbook makes barely any noise and most people don’t know that i am using a laptop until they look in the back of the classroom (where i sit) to check the clock or something. i type a lot faster than i write so it is kind of a necessity for history and managerial accounting.</p>

<p>Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I’ll be using my laptop next year, in class, then. The relief of knowing I’m able to write everything I need to down will probably weigh out whether or not I’m losing friends based on who doesn’t like the sound of key’s tapping.</p>
