Letter of extenuating circumstances

How does one go about writing one/ does the letter even help?

my situation: older brother is a drug addict and has lived at home all four years of my high school career. started using at the end of my sophomore year. his addiction has greatly affected my schoolwork, extracurricular participation and especially motivation. he has had numerous ODs, rehab stints, near death experiences, and endangered me. i even had to drive him to the hospital as an unlicensed driver in the middle of the night. my grades have dropped as a result and so has extracurricular participation. obviously if a college knew about this, it might help explain some things. is it worth it to write this type of letter?

btw: i have another CC account. i created this one for anonymity because of this situation.

In my opinion, you should contact a college official about the issue before you apply. Anonymously.

If you decide that this is information you wish to have shared with colleges, this is a place where your guidance counselor can be helpful. He or she can explain these extenuating circumstances in the letter that goes with your Secondary School Report.

^^Agree, have your GC address this in the SSR.

^^ Third what Sikorsky said.
