This is for UM students or anyone else who knows: do a lot of people apply to Michigan from the state of Maryland?

Yes. I have met sooooooooooooooooooooo many kids from Maryland it's weird.

Are you serious or just being sarcastic?

I'm not kidding you, but I think the Potomac area schools can be considered feeders. btw, my roomy's from md.

I'm not from Potomac. Do you think there would be some advantage if I apply from Maryland (a little far from Potomac) in terms of UM wanting diversification?

What I'm wondering is also whether UM would be more giving admissions-wise to Michigan residents or to say someone from Alaska or something (because of their background).

I'm from Bethesda, next to Potomac.

Maryland is overrepresented, so there would be no benefits applying as a resident of Maryland. There are currently over 300 undergrads who are Maryland residents at Michigan. Only Michigan, Illinois, NY, NJ, California, PA and Ohio are better represented. Alaska is another story altogether. Michigan would definitely like to attract Alaska residents.
