<p>Not an expert on nanotechnology. However, I could suggest you to look for information posted on various national lab websites, e.g. NASA NIH NIST, Lawrence, oak-ridge or even summer student internship information on various defense-related labs i.e., NRL, ARL, AFRL. Basically, if you are a science (chem., physics, bio) or engineering (ME or EE) major, you may find yourself well positioned for the summer job (can be extended for several summers and possibly employed after graduation). One caveat is that there is a long process time inherent in any government job: So it’s better for you to start the process now for the summer of 2007!!! ::eek:: Good Luck!</p>

<p>Like I said numerous times in this board, school size does matter when it comes to engineering and science. (of course with very few exception like Caltech). For undergrad, I would say, the Big Three Engineering Schools (MIT, Berkeley, Stanford) and big size top engineering schools should have good nanotechnology programs: you can take some courses in your junior/senior year, but you should really go for advanced degree(s) for specialization). For PhDs, again top-PhDs-in engineering are MIT, Stanford, & Berkeley, and here I’d add Caltech & several other universities noted for nano-related programs.</p>

<p>As you know, nanotechnology is truly a multi-disciplinary program, and school size does matter a lot. Here, small boutique size LACish or even Ivies with small engineering school (except Cornell) do suffer greatly because of their small size programs & faculties. Quite coincidentally, I read an article on the Princetonian where the president laments the relatively small size of their engineering program. I know Princeton has a good engineering school as an ivy school. But she knows a bigger size school is necessary for conducting meaningful national level research and getting corresponding recognition.</p>

<p>A good starting point is to look at schools with strong chemistry and material science departments-- MIT, Cornell, Stanford, Berkeley, Northwestern…etc.<br>

<p>Chem. Or Physics is a good choice if you are interested in the material side of nanorobotics. As a matter of fact, you will find a vast majority of nano-scale-material researchers are “physical chemists”. On the other hand, if you also interested in the nano-Robotics. This requires good understanding of robotics, which is usually the domain of ME/EE, and, to some extent, CS. </p>

<p>To answer you question, chemistry/physics is a good major for what you are interested in. The same can be said for ME/EE or CS.</p>

<p>Okay. I will be finishing a BS in Phys. and Chem. Should I pursue a MS in ME or EE engineering to prepare more adequately for nanorobotics, etc.? Next I am looking at getting a Ph.D.</p>

<p>You should check out individual dept (whether EE or ME or CS) of the schools that you are interested in obtaining your PhD or ScD. Go to their web-sites or better visit schools. Do talk to professors who are active PIs in the nano-programs, ask about RA or fellowship opportunities or number of projects funded by DARPA/NASA/whatnot. Usually, there is a nanotechnology center where professors from various depts. collaborate in many sub-research-projects under big umbrella fund. If the professor who’s heavily involved in nanorobotics (who also controls funds) is from ME, you should apply to ME dept for your PhD. Ofcourse he/she will be your dissertation advisor.</p>
