NYU and Laptops

Besides the two or three offered through NYU bookstore, is there any way to recieve discounts on other laptops? I'm currently interested in the Dell XPS Gen 2, but it's quite pricey.

I got my dell laptop from dell for around $250 less then the Computer store price.

For the XPS Gen 2, you will probably pay around $2000. To get discounts you will need to wait and search for them. Yahoo often has Dell ads on its homepage. Dell also has coupons that save around $700. Some are listed here http://www.allonlinecoupons.com/st/dell/.

You can always sign up as a Student Developer and buy an Apple---not only do you get a tremendous one-time discount, but they send you free software, t-shirts, etc.

i know a couple sites that have dell discounts from time to time, but when they do have discounts they are pretty amazing. i got my dell 700m with a $500 off coupon. here they are:

www.gotapex.com
www.passwird.com

you just have to check them everyday and wait for a deal that you like

I would assume NYU would have relations with a major computer manufacture in order for to pass discounts to its students?

There is a good discount on IBM Thinkpads through IBM Direct. NYU doesn't contract with one specific computer company so there is no bulk discounts. If they made every student have the same computer, then there would be heavy discounting. For instance, my friend is going to RPI and they have to get the school's IBM Thinkpad, which is top of the line with speciality software included, for $800 less than regular price.

do we really need a laptop?
I'm bringing my desktop with me.

It is your choice on the type of computer to bring. A friend told me it is better to bring a laptop because, for instance, when your roommate is bothering you, you can pick up and leave, going anywhere on campus with Wi-Fi.

ive always had a desktop and in feb i got my first laptop and I LOVE IT. i dont know how i could live without it. laptops are good for writing papers in the library and what not... they are just nice to have.

Apple, Dell, and HP all offer educational discounts.

How do we get these discounts?
