Parents of the HS Class of 2015

The two biggest things I accomplished this weekend? 1) Finally figuring out how to log on to the “new” CC…and 2) Finding a little icon for CC that kind of looks like me in my “natural parenting state” (though my icon is younger & thinner). Since I’ll be on CC thru something like Parents of the HS Class of 2028 (God willing), I figured I’d get tired of the generic “CC w/a grad cap” icon.

DS was pleased w/his SAT overall, which probably means he failed. Proctor cut essay time short by 1+ minutes and some students called him on it right during the test! He was unrelenting, so DS’s essay was incomplete. Some kids said they would file a protest, but all DS cares about is breaking 1960 so he’s ready just in case he makes the NMSF cut-off for our state. He will now turn to the ACT because he takes it Feb 8. Not sure I should have signed him up for that, right on the heels of the SAT.
:-/

Does anyone know if Money-Grab College Board still offers the feature where you can pay them yet more money to call for SAT scores a few days early? We need to figure out if DS must go “back in” in March…just in case he didn’t get the score he needed this time.

@GoAskDad–I have never heard of the option of paying to obtain scores early from CB, at least for SAT I and II. Dec scores were released 16 days after test date instead of the historical 19 days, but I don’t know if that was a one-off for Christmas or if they are now trying to follow ACT’s lead.

Would he wait until May or wants to take it while the material is fresh?

@MamaBear16–on the left of this page, immediately under Forum Home, there should be a list of topics starting with Latest Posts. If you click on that word, it will bring you to the page of latest posts. What I am finding annoying is that the first dozen or so are not always most recent but instead ones that someone has identified as important.

My D got her December score back after 16 days, and her friend took the SAT earlier ( Oct or Nov) and also got it back after 16 days so it looks like that is the new normal. I have never heard of paying to get the score earlier.

How do you get those cute little icons? When I click on the little icon in the reply spot it lets me click on but nothing happens. Also how do you put a picture where the blue CC square is on the left?

To change your picture go to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/picture

The smileys are accessed by a tiny little smiley face in the upper right hand corner of the reply box.

%-( :-SS >:) :-*

Ct1417 – That function used to work, but now it’s showing me lots of random posts. Not at all in backwards chronological order (latest post first) like it did before. I’m hoping that it will magically get fixed. That, and the iPhone app. I found that reading CC with the app was actually easier than on the laptop.

Question: I knew how to quote a comment on the old forum, but how do we do it on this one? (like OHMomof2 did just above me)?

Thanks for the info. I tried to take a picture but it was upside down!!?? :-?

@Mamabear16, quoting is the same as it was on the old form:
[ quote ] text you wish to quote [/ quote ] Remove all spaces within each bracket.

ETA: had to add spaces in my quote example.

^ That would have been a real improvement to me, making a quote button. This just seems like window dressing, no improvement in utility. And the app on my Android phone is no longer functional. Grrr. I am not a big fan of change but have recognized that it goes with the territory of internet forums and I just try to ignore it and push forward. Actually, that is pretty much what I do with most unpleasant things in life! Including my 16 yos current aversion to completing the applications for summer programs and asking for the required recommendations. I am hoping if she gets through these it will make it easier to do for colleges. Ha! Last summer she only applied to one program but it did require recommendations, an essay, and even an interview. And none of that seems to be making it easier this time around. Oh well, all I can do is provide the information, encourage her, and then step back and let her figure out if she is going to do it herself.

BHM – Thanks for the info! There was an easier way before… Oh well. I guess I have to learn to accept change!

LeftofPisa – I’m having similar issues with the summer application. It’s honestly making me very worried for next year, with all the apps, recommendations, etc. :-S

Ditto! She could have applied to 5 or 6 but in the end she chose one and said if she doesn’t get it, she’ll work or play LAX or something else entirely. But it did scare me about next year, honestly if i could afford it I’d hire an essay person just to get her writing and editing those.

Semester 2 begins in the AM. Lots of field hockey this weekend for DD. She’s a bit sore a pulled a muscle, but a few days of stretching and Motrin will alleviate the discomfort.

I’m finding that the app process for a Summer Program (first time my D is doing that) has been a good eye-opener for her. I sincerely doubt she’ll get it because it’s really competitive, but it required an essay (I love her dearly, but the essay wasn’t all that great, but hey, she asked me to look it over) but it was good practice, and it also required her to approach teachers for recommendations which she has never done before. It’s been a good learning experience for us.

I started to do some pre-trip planning tonight for our OOS campus visit extravaganza in April. D2 is currently planning on focusing on schools where she hopes to be offered large merit $$ (hopefully NM) so the current itinerary will include UCF, UAB, UT Dallas, Oklahoma, OK State, and Kentucky. Planning formal tours at all but UTD (informal walk-around only due to time constraints). It maps out at a little over 4,000 miles round trip, a week in a rental car and several more nights in hotels. Here’s hoping our familial bonds are strong enough to survive the trip. [-O<

I’m afraid to ask Mrs Wolverine if we’re anticipating any more heavy snowfalls. She and the kids have already had to snowthrow/shovel more times since I left for my “Joisey Joiney” than all of last winter, and the guilt is eating away at me. I know there’s a possibility of wind chill causing some school closures, and the school has buses available to shuttle kids between the two buildings on campus instead of having them walk the crossing path. While my “well-insulated” form is capable of withstanding that level of cold, I worry about my brood’s well-being when I’m not there. :-S

Hope everyone stays warm and safe.

Wow, that’s ambitious! I just booked most of our 3 night, 2 university Chicago long weekend.

Does anybody know why my picture keeps appearing upside down after I upload it? :)) well at least I got the hang of these little icon things!! My D is going in early today - 6:30- ~O) due to some presentation that she is getting ready for. I told her to stop by guidance and please ask them to add the ACT score to Naviance and she simply said " no." She will ask them to do it when she meets with her GC in a few weeks. They added her SAT so maybe the ACT is coming soon. It’s not a big deal but I like the visual. We are getting ready for our 7 school visit in February :open_mouth: followed by our 4 school visit in April. I think she may have one or two Midwest schools on the list as well, but we won’t look at them right now. I am hoping that she can narrow down her criteria somewhat after these trips and come up with a list. Last night I sent her a text telling her that the Feb 8 ACT is her choice and if she wants to be done she can. Her response: I am taking the test. Ok good. Now I feel better that it’s her decision and I did not force the issue. I am getting mixed reviews about the SAT this past Saturday. Some of the people in my neck of the woods report that the vocabulary was harder than usual.

Good Monday Morning, just felt like saying that, no delay today for us . Tonight looks brutal so I definetly will plan for one tomorrow. We also have our road trip planned, for spring break but ours is basically a straight line south.
We have already seen 3 on her list. We will not see the one in Canada unless admitted to the program.
Yes, I said the great white north–her least favorite but our financial safety–she’s a dual citizen.

No summer applications for DD, she will be a CIT at the camp she has been attending for the last seven years. She gets paid this year, and next year she will be a regular counselor. Makes looking for summer work in the future easy for her. She loves camp. Only sad part this summer is that she will be gone 8 weeks instead of the usual 4.

Hoosier my daughter also works at camp and LOVES it. She does not understand how they pay her to be outside all day playing with kids and swimming. She has also learned and lot about managing their behavior etc. Stay safe and warm in this weather!!

We will not be able to do visits until the summer due to work schedules. We can see the ones in New England before that since they are close but the ones further away will have to wait. She did have a couple of the big midwestern schools on her list since they have highly regarded accounting programs but she despises cold weather and I am making sure to point out how bitterly cold it can get in those places-

She didn’t have much to say about the SAT other than is was easier than the PSAT and she thinks she did well. She took it with a couple of friends who had the same opinion. I take that with a grain of salt though as she walked in and took it cold so I wonder if she really has a good handle on how she did. We will know soon enough.

She is in school today and is planning on having all her work and exams caught up by the middle of the week. If that happens she will finally be current with all her work-which hasn’t happened since the concussion in October. I hope that will help her overall outlook on things…

What do you recommend she do to see if she might like to take the ACT-I have no idea about that test and would welcome suggestions on how she could get a feel for it before she signs up to take it.

Pepper - re ACT, my recommendation is have your D take one (or two) time measured sample test and see how she does. After she takes the practice exam, you can compare it with her SAT experience - how does she feel about the test? her score compare to SAT score? how was her time management?..etc. You can get the old retired tests from the Real ACT prep book (RedBook) or try to find free tests online. I think a lot of kids struggle with the Science section.
