This will likely be one of my more shallow posts, but it’s a concern that I can’t seem to shake. No matter. I’m currently preparing to send in my application to St. John’s college in annapolis. Although it is the perfect school for me and I would be absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to attend, the superficial side of me is fearing that everyone I know is going to think that I’m going to some rinky-dink dump. The worst is going to be responding to the inevitable “what is your major?” I’m not looking forward to having to explain the great books program to people who don’t even know what the great books are let alone why anyone would be interested in studying them. At least most people in the academic community will understand. OK, I think I’ve embarrassed myself enough already. I should probably worry about getting accepted before I belittle the place.

St. John’s has a good reputation, although I suspect it’s better for pre-law or humanities students than science majors. You might try exploring similar programs, like U Chicago’s.

Thanks alot for the info.!

yup those are some good suggestions of other schools to look at. Still, St. Johns College is an awesome school and as long as you know that it shouldnt bother you what other people think. Anyone who’s opinion will actually matter (grad school, employer etc.) should know or be able to find out what a great and unique school St. Johns is.

I seriously considered applying there myself… I was mainly turned off by how small it was student wise… but it’s an amazingly unique school.

Really Derek, if you have to explains what the Great Books or the Classics are to someone, then their opinion on the reputatioin of your school should mean squat. don’t let peoples lack of knowledge hinder your opportunities or college choices.

Shoot! I’m going to Amherst College, can wear a cap that says “Amherst College” to work everyday, and 90% customers still assume it is UMass-Amherst. Some moms even warn we to be weary of the frats houses and don’t party and drink too much like the other kids as if I were going to ZooMass. Really, I know how great of a school it is, you probably do to, but b/c 90% of the people running through the checkout line don’t doesn’t mean that I ever contemplated “I should have gone to Stanford or Harvard so atleast people know my school.” What’s the point, Amherst is where I’m happy…and if St. John (MD)'s is where you’ll be happy, then, by all means, apply!

You are exactly right. St. John’s really is the school that suits me best.
