I can’t talk definitely about breaking the bank, but will say that the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) had an excellent pre-college program that my daughter really benefited from. She attended two summers. Several of her creations were later included in her portfolio. The first summer she emphasized 2-D; the second summer, 3-D. Better than any program or course she had available near home. She was subsequently admitted to RISD, CMU, MICA, and other art programs.
