thats why HUMANS read your apps, not machines. they dont just accept the kid with the higher weighted gpa, admissions officers know the difference in difficulty of courseload here

It is possible that the student has completed all required classes: there is usually no requirement that a student who takes courses elsewhere cannot get credit…thus take fewer classes during any given semester.

It’s fairly common for seniors to only take 3 classes at my school. Also, we have weighted GPAs that determine class rank, so student A would end up with a higher weighted GPA AND class rank. And unfortunately, for schools like UT-Austin, I really don’t think humans read many of the apps. If someone is not in the top 10% and doesn’t have amazing SATS they are pretty much SOL unfortunately.

student B has a lower GPA (and also a lower rank accordingly) because he has less than a 5.0 since his theatre class was only worth 4.0. Student A has a 5.0 because all his classes were worth 5.

i’m in a similar dilemma…i took jazz band zero period at 630AM every semester (so eight periods per day during hs) and even being in the top jazz band is non-honors (4/5 weighted) at my school…i have a 4.0uw but 39/350 in rank even tho ppl around 10 have less ap’s than i do…taking eight classes a day actually hurt me massively…i know my counselor spoke to this in his rec but i just don’t know if top tier schools can overlook this terrible rank

well what i’m doing is sending a note of explanation w/ midyear report (i thought before that my rank was 10 but recently found out it was 39) and i’ll just say that being in the top jazz band is just as much work as an ap class and explain the “idiosyncrasies” in our weighting system…then i’ll have my gc and band director sign it so they will take it more seriously
