Actually, NOTHING is a sure thing. Some accomplishments would enormously raise the probability of being accepted at SOME top school, but there isn’t any guarantee for anybody of being admitted for sure at any particular school. Some applicants are in the happy position of having to decide among more than one top school that offered them admission, but that they applied to more than one school suggests that they didn’t consider the admission process a sure thing.

And now that I have given my serious answer, I will add to the list started at the beginning of the thread:

Finding the cure for the common cold!

Yeah, there are guarantees. How could a college turn you down if you founded it?

I don’t think John Harvard is still alive. Maybe he’s living with Elvis and Jimmy Buffet in Mexico City!

finding John Harvard’s bones, and cloning him - think that’d get you into harvard?

Being God, or God’s nephew.

Although I don’t think that a second-cousin would cut it.

Finding cold fusion

Discovering Atlantis

Brokering a permanent and effective peace between Israel and Palestine

donate a library.

As far as a mathematical formula goes: I found the derivative and antiderivative for f(x)=|x| (you don’t have to break it into a piecewise function) and showed it to my math teacher and it was published in some magazine. They’ve probably been discovered before, but they were really obscure.

Be Native American. A big feather in your cap.

Your daddy is president of the college.

Write with the skill of Shakespeare and have your plays mass-produced and well-loved by all in the world before the age of 15.

Invent a computer that will never freeze/break down/get spyware

Stabilize governments in African, South American governments.

Cure for cancer or AIDS. Or obliterate all traces of poverty singlehandedly.

And for some Christmas cheer, prove the existence of Santa Claus.

pi is exactly 3!!!

become the Dean of Admissions yourself.

I sold my movie to sundance…youngest filmmaker ever…I am on three panels at the telluride film festival with john saylles and steven speilberg…I’m betting this doesn’t help me at all…

There are (a few) MOPpers who don’t get into their first-choice school. There are quite a few USAMO qualifiers who don’t.

That’s why I say nothing is a sure thing. President Carter’s daughter (and Vice President Mondale’s son) went to Brown but not to Harvard, Princeton, etc. MAYBE they got admitted to lots of colleges and chose Brown, but maybe Brown was the top college that admitted them. People vary in their preferences, and they manifestly vary in their qualifications for admission, but the admissions offices build CLASSES–they don’t just fill up a list of admittees from a strict rank-ordering of applicants.

Amy Carter just seems like “Brown” would have been a good fit for her.

Shag the dean’s daughter and blackmail.
