(unqiue) applicant for the college of arts and science chance thread

<p>obviously it’s not as hard as stern, but how demanding would it be? </p>

<p>here are my stats:</p>

<p>Unweighted GPA: 2.92 not including senior grades (yes, yes i know, but read ahead…)
Weighted: 3.4</p>

<p>SATs</p>

<p>M: 800
CR: 610</p>

<p>SATII</p>

<p>M: 700
CHEMISTRY: 600</p>

<p>Senior Grades projected to be all As with two Bs (3.65)</p>

<p>ECs:</p>

<p>-Varsity Track and Field 4 Years
-Co-Captain of Cricket Team
-President of Chess Club
-School Orchestra + Prestigous Orchestra program for 3 years
-Violin 3 years (short amount of playing time but got at an advanced level is something i’ll talk about in my essay)
-School Computer Technical Administration</p>

<p>Activities:</p>

<p>-Secretary/co-founder of a student tutoring program at the local library
-historical society webmaster and computer technician
-Taught basic computer lessons to adults
-medical center as a doctor’s lab assistant
-red cross blood drive volunteer</p>

<p>i would like to go into their undergraduate medicine program or computer engineering program. </p>

<p>GPA: (10th, 11th and 12th are at the school im currently at)</p>

<p>took hardest courses possible with virtually no non-honours. i’m also a canadian citizen, if that has any impact on my admissions process. i go to a prestigous pubic high school in new jeresy (princeton high school) and i’m korean.</p>

<p>the reason for my low GPA during juniorwas that i was taking too many ECs because i wanted to discover myself and what i wanted to do. however, my interests boiled down to medicine and engineering as a result. despite my sacrifice in grades, i found out what i wanted to do from these ECs (which is obviously going to by my essay topic) and what my passion is. </p>

<p>any input would be extremely, extremely appreciated</p>

<p>You’re like me. I have a low GPA and good SAT scores too.</p>

<p>I don’t think you have much of a chance, honestly. I’m not saying that to be mean, I don’t think I do either.</p>

<p>However, apply anyway. I did, because I really want to go there. Just make sure to write a good essay. Maybe you will get in, who knows.</p>

<p>and it’s the CAS i’m applying to, which should be quite a bit less demanding than stern</p>

<p>i don’t know how much it helps, but a lot of these schools say if there is a reason for a low gpa (i.e. you were sick for a month of school) to let them know – it happens. maybe have your guidance counselor put it in his/her letter or on the form he/she fills out.</p>

<p>so i was accepted to CAS early, and my college guidance counselor said NYU-each of the schools- wont admit applicants with any grades below an 80 on their transcripts, unless its explained by some sort of note. She wasnt lying, i peronsally know people whose stats were amazing(high GPA’s, high SATs) who werent accepted becuase they had one grade in the 70’s</p>

<p>Curls that’s pretty BS; A C may definitely hurt your chances but nowhere near what you’re describing. A high SAT score or successful SAT II’s, or even good essays or recs, easily counter a single C. And what if it was in like Art class or something. </p>

<p>Hey you’re getting in…I had 2 Cs in math and I just got in!!! AS AN ECON MAJOR!!!I’m so happy I’m crying.</p>

<p>Cs is no where near as bad as my 2.2 in my junior year… and its worse that they can’t see my senior grades because that’s my only sign of improvement. i’ll def point that out in my essay, but will they trust it enough?</p>

<p>Frankly, I don’t think your circumstances are as unique as you make them out to be. Plenty of aspiring pre-medical and engineering students participate in many activities and still earn top-notch grades.</p>

<p>That being said, I still think you have a chance for NYU. Write a great essay that at least partially addresses your grades, and make sure you have good recommendations that focus on your best qualities.</p>

<p>any other opinions? i can’t show my senior year grades because they don’t want midyear reports, so what hsould i do to show that i’m doing well? just state it in my essay?</p>

<p>I was in a similar boat as you, with a slightly higher GPA and a slightly lower SAT score, but I just got into GSP ED. I’m not sure if you’d settle with GSP, but considering I’m only allowed to commute to schools in my area, I was ecstatic. I had a C on my transcript for Math B during my sophomore year, and a C+ for Math A my freshman year. The rest of my classes were honors and I’ll be graduating with 10 AP classes under my belt, and I, like you, have really great extracurriculars. It really boiled down to my activities sheet and my essay in which I explained my… many missteps during my sophomore year which had led to a 2.5 for sophomore year, completely descimating my GPA. With a low GPA it all comes down to selling yourself outside of your transcript. Good luck!</p>

<p>Tell your counselor to make a note about your senior year grades, perhaps. “So and so has shown remarkable improvement over the last year, blah blah”</p>
