Hi, im 23 and so far I have associates degrees in communications and liberal arts. I want to pursue film. I graduated with the com degree this past spring semester.

My plan so far is to spend the following year working freelance film jobs while I pay off a few non school loans and build up my resume/portfolio before i begin my bacholers degree.

I guess my question is whether waiting a year is the smart thing to do? I don’t want to have to pay off loans on a bed, film equipment, etc along with student debt. Or is waiting a year kind of wasting time?

My friends who have done it say the biggest benefit to a film degree is the people you meet, not the material you learn. I’d say spend the next year working in film as planned, and see what things look like at that point. If you can find work in film that pays the bills, stick with it.

I don’t know where you live, but if you’re in a city, look for:

An organization of artists interested in film and video
A community group that teaches inexpensive classes in various film and video topics
A film festival for local artists

Join them, meet them, make friends with them. Become a leader.

If you aren’t in a city, consider moving. A peer group will help in so many ways.
