Which LACs?

I was wondering which Liberal Arts schools are known for or excel in their political science/government departments. Also, can anyone include the reputation of a few lesser known schools with the well known LACs, like Colorado College, etc. in those same departments. Thank you all so much!!

Claremont McKenna, Carleton, Macalester, Oberlin, Grinnell, Swarthmore

Take a look at Dickinson.

Occidental in LA

When looking at schools you may want to consider finding out about the availability of Washington DC off-campus semesters. These are often set up coupling coursework with an internship and can be a great experience for observing the political process at the highest levels first hand. They are offered by a number of schools. I’m personally aware of LAC programs via Carleton, Hamilton, and CMC/Pomona. There are certainly others. This is a description of and link to the awesome Carleton program run by Steven Schier, the go-to “guru” of the regional Midwestern political scene.

Winter 2007 Update from Washington!

Twenty Carleton students are experiencing the great variety of Washington, DC during an off-campus program this Winter Term. The students spend three days a week an interns in a Washington workplace. This term , for example, program interns are located in the offices of House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-NC), Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Charles Schumer (D-NY), the International Trade Commission, and the Embassy of South Korea.

The students also encounter over seventy program speakers during their ten weeks in Washington. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, former Senate Majority leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), and Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Russ Feingold (D-WI) are scheduled to meet with the group. Alumni speakers include John McConnell ('86), Senior Speechwriter for President Bush, John Harris ('85), Editor-in-Chief of The Politico newspaper and website, Elissa McBride ('87), Director of Education for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Jeffrey Bergner ('69), Assistant Secretary of State for Legislation. Along the way, students visit the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, the White House complex, the Supreme Court, the State Department and the Embassies of Germany, China and diplomats from Cuba.

In addition to the above, Reed, Haverford, Amherst and Washington & Lee.

For the lesser-known LACs, definitely look at Franklin & Marshall and also try Whitman, Lawrence, Wooster and Sewanee.

Colgate, Holy Cross(1 US Senator, 5 Congressmen are HC alums) and Bowdoin.
