I would like to major in mathematics. Do you guys think it is ok to write two to three sentences about a former math teacher of mine, who got me interested in maths? Or should I rather focus on the University and less on myself (or other people) in the "why Penn"-essay?

Having a story behind the essay makes it more interesting as well as giving you an opportunity to talk about yourself and your interests.

Yeah, the essays supposed to be about what Penn has to offer, and how those aspects are perfect for you.
