Hey guys, I'm african american female (parents were born in Africa)
I have a 3.5 gpa
I've taken 7 AP classes an Honors Psychology class and 14 college prep classes dring high school mostly B's and C's a couple of A's

I've taken the SAT once and I got a 1860. 710 CR, 520 M (I know :(), 630 W
I've also been in Choir (JV and Varsity level) the choirs I've been in won top rating in our region. I also partcipate in UIL competitions as a soloist and receive 1's. Ihave also participated in 2 school musicals (they're huge in our town)

I have also been president of a Nigerian ethnic group for youth for two years. I've also volunteered at my local church for four years as a summer counselor for VBS (Vacation Bible School). And I've also been a volunteer at a library for two years.
I am also a Member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. I'm ranked 200/1008 (top 20%?)
I've also been doing some individual research on the Yoruba, Igbo, and Urhobo tribes of Nigeria for a year.

Do you guys think I have a chance if I write amazing essays and bring my "specialness" up front? I know I don't have the luxury of being in the top ten percent. I am going to write 3 of the four essays on ApplyTexas to help flesh out my application. Does anyone else have any suggestions for me to increase my chances of admission? Should I apply as early as I possibly can?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you take your SAT again and bring your math up to a 600 and keep your verbal score at least 700, you would be an automatic academic admit (Top 25% of class, at least 1300 SAT with a minimum of 600 in both categories). However, I think your statistics look very good and you are competitive to get in for non-engineering majors (your math scores need to be higher for that).

You have a great chance of getting in. I think it is now a matter of how bad you want to go to TAMU. In other words, apply early, do your best on the application, write awesome essays, and you're in! :)

Do you believe going to College Station and to the Visitors Center will help getting accepted? And what do you consider getting your application in early? would last week be considered early?

Every "official" visit you make to A&M gives you bonus points on your application. It shows that you are interested enough in their school to take the time to actually see the campus. It is too late to send in an "early" application. That date would have been by December 1st where you can be considered for A&M scholarships. However, you have until January 15th for the final application deadline.

my application went in on November 24th. So is that "early application"? So I have attended SLOT, been to an advisor at the campus, and to see an advisor at an off campus site in Arlington TX... I hope all these help me. I do not have automatic admission, I am in the top 12% of my class and my SAT/ACT is good not great. I have a high gpa and all AP course work - plus two dual credit courses.

I know a girl with not so great stats(although she had good leadership ECs)that met with an admissions counselor on campus when she hadn't heard by early March. She stressed how much she wanted to go to A&M since she was young and she would be the 13th member of her extended family to go there. She got in a week later.....

I also have a question about the scholarship application. I had sent in my transcript request before the Dec. 1st deadline, but on the AIS page it shows that they received it on Dec. 3. Could I still be considered for scholarships from Texas A&M?

i think you should probably be in if you write great essay and show them all the work you've done.
