CMU priority wait list - what are the chances?

OctaviarOctaviar Registered User Posts: 196 Junior Member
Got letter today and found out S was priority wait listed.

OK. I HAVE to know.... is there a real chance he could be admitted? I've heard that a wait list from CMU should be experienced as an honor and nothing more. Is the same true for the priority wait list?

In over my head here!

I know of one boy who was accepted off the wait list last year, might've been more but I don't know.

Don't want to get your hopes up but I know of a boy who got into CMU and it wasn't his first choice (which he did get into). I have a feeling he won't be going to CMU because of his strong ties with the other school. Best of luck!

thanks for the heads up! I'll let S know... we are wondering if the wait list is prioritized by number or if each accepted student has an alternate?

My D was thrilled to be on the Priority Waitlist for BFA in MT last year and really didn't dare to expect much more than that! They had accepted 5 girls, and all 5 accepted so no girls got off the waitlist. Not sure about the boys but I did hear that one did get off the waitlist. Fingers crossed for your S if CMU is where he wants to be!

@momarmarino I actually know a girl who got off the wait list for MT last year. She didn't take the spot and decided to go somewhere else because she didn't get a good vibe from them.

Octaviar, I maybe wrong, but I believe CMU's theatre department only uses a "Priority Waitlist." So what has been said in previous threads about the CMU "waitlist" applies to the priority waitlist. I think the students on the waitlist group have been assigned a number that was probably used during the final vetting process. However, my guess is that they go to an "alternate" for a declined accepatance rather than go by a number order. Congratulations! My son was priority waitlisted last year. The nice thing is the department gives you a day/time as to when they will notify you of any availability and last year they stuck to that promise. My son had already decided and fell in love with his choice by the time they contacted him in May, so there was not any "sitting on the edge of our seat" anxiety. We were just well enough prepared to spring into a quick decision mode should there have been an offer. I would encourage your student to choose the number one school from the acceptances and then have a backpocket plan should an offer off the waitlist come in. I think a waitlist student is give 24-48 hours to decide to accept any follow up offer.

No @Adaquince, they have two waitlists; I know this for a fact. One is "Priority" the other is just a Waitlist. I know people who were placed on both last year. People who are just wait listed have no shot whatsoever. They have it just in case one year everyone on the Priority rejects their offer; it's only a precaution and people who are wait listed don't even think about the idea of getting off because they know its impossible.

@hopenest: Oh I did not know that. I guess I should check my sources before I open my mouth! Given my brain is mush, I can't even remember what my source was :/

@hopenest, Nonetheless, the information I offered above is still useful for any CMU theatre applicant waitlist.

    Thanks Everyone!
One other question someone here might know the answer to: If they do take someone from the wait list, do they do it as needed ( anytime between now and May 9th or do they wait until May 9th and draw from the wait list then for any needs?
  • hopenesthopenest Registered User Posts: 85 Junior Member
May 9th? Do you mean May 1st? It can be both. With a school like CMU who stay close with their acceptees they are likely to know before May 1st whether or not everyone is going. However, someone might be wait listed at their top choice and hear about their acceptance late, CMU might accept a waitlister, chances are lower I believe. Everyone I know who got accepted heard back before May 1st.

So a person on the wait list could get a letter anytime informing them of a spot?
  • mountainhikermountainhiker Registered User Posts: 809 Member
Much more likely to be a phone call, with 24-48 hours to decide.

I just found this discussion, so sorry for the late post. My son was priority wait listed for drama at CMU last year,
so when May 1st came and went, I assumed it was a "no." Then he received an acceptance by email, but not till around May 5th. (O Happy Day!!!) They don't know who is going to officially commit till after the May 1 decision date. Then they can go to the priority wait list. Some people are still weighing offers from other schools up until the last minute, so don't lose hope if you don't hear back on May 1. I know of at least two other boys who were offered spots from the priority wait list. Best of luck!

D was accepted into tech theater early but the FA package did not come until we visited the school in mid-May! This could explain some last minute cancellations.
