It seems that more and more people are asking about non-scholastic training on here lately. This is COLLEGE Confidential and I don’t think many people here - including me - know much at all about those programs. Backstage.com is a better place to look. Here are lists of such programs in LA and NYC that some of the people over there who seem to know what they are talking about recommend. I’m going to suggest that it be bumped or linked when people ask.

Scene Study/Acting (It varies. Some schools are not for everyone. Chubbuck, Eric Morris, and Howard Fine are not for people who aren't fans of Strasberg or Uta Hagen (ie. affective memory and substitution.) Playhouse West, Joanne Baron/DW Brown, and Acting Corps are more Meisner oriented. Try to audit these places and make sure if they're for you or not.

Also to add to LA would be the Ted Brunetti studio which is located at the Howard Fine studio, he is a really great guy and a great teacher.

Also in regards to improv the NYC, here are the most common locations for taking classes:
    Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB)
    People's Improv Theater (The Pit)
    The Magnet
