UC and Cal Poly SLO

I wanted to apply in UC and cal poly SLO (the CSU system in general)...but their requirements are sooo different...cal poly SLO requires you to take all this extra stuff like speech...but UC doesn't I think they need to change the system so they both have similar requirments for transfer students who want to consider going to both schools.

Other than the Oral Communication requirement (Speech), what other requirements does Cal State have that UC doesn't?

Ah, I was checking over IGETC for my JC, and it has a 'graduation requirement in US History, Constitution, and American Ideals'...where you have to take a history course and a poli sci course...but those are also part of IGETC, under Humanities/Social and Behavior Sciences, so you can just take those courses and fulfil both requirements, right?

yea for me I can't do IGETC but for cal poly I have to do gen ed stuff too...

I faced the same problem...I ended up not applying to Cal Poly.

But I think completing IGETC would do it for CSUz. Some UC engineering department will not accept IGETC, but the classes you take can be used individually to satisfy the campus's specific GE reqs.

IGETC is not as bad as some people make it seem to be. Most of it's classes fall into your lower devision classes, like math, eng, science. The only extra thing is one music/art, 2 history/soical science/human. So thats basicly it/

u know wat indie_boy I have yet to find a UC which will accept IGETC for engineering...and I don't think UC even recommends takin GE classes for engineering since they have so many prerequisites...to do that I would have to spend 3-4 years. For some people it's really hard...for example theres this guy in my chem class who is going for mechanical engineering and has been in community college for 4 years and he is still in pre-calc !!! he has a 2.4 and expects to get into UC...I didn't know what to say to him so I just nodded.

I would have really liked to keep cal poly as a backup...let's see what happens I am thinking of just applying anyway...

fei, IGETC is not a course pattern for a major. It's set of classes which fufills general education requirements for a UC. I am bio major.

I still take 2 calcs, year of chem, year of bio, year o-chem, year of physics. But on top of that. I took/will take 2 engs, 1 music, 2 histories, 2 humans.

So i consider that i took 5 extra classes. ~15 units. But it's beneficial to me b/c i need to balance science w/ other subjects or i will go insane. Helps GPA. Also requirement for some grad schools to have other general classes.

yes I know IGETC is a gen ed thing but no UC recommends (and some don't even accept it) it for engr. majors...theres is no way I can complete my prereq for engr majors (2 writing, 2 comp sci (more for some UCs), 3 physics, 6 math, 2 chem) in 2 years and take gen ed classes...yes I am going insane right now...:)

my friend got "not selected". does anyone know what is the meaning??
    pending or reject??
  • feifei . Posts: 688 Member

IGETC is not required for admission into any UC. If you know what major you want to do, and what school, you should just follow what assist says you need to get into that major and school. IGECT has a lot of extras for most majors, so if you know what you want to do it isn't very good.
