Currently enrolled in 32A with Chayes but thinking of dropping it to just do another GE. Incoming freshman by the way. Heard so many horror stories about Chayes and thought it would be better off if I just took another GE which I'm interested in; other classes I'm enrolled in 20A and another GE. I'm not a engineering major so I have no need to rush math courses and 32a would theoretically be the last math course for my major. So good or bad idea to not take math course first quarter? Need insight and opinions on Chayes; is he really as bad as people make him out to be? Thanks.

32A is really the last math class an engineer needs? I would have assumed engineers need more (33AB + some other fancy stuff). I took 32A, 20A, and a GE my freshman fall quarter. I recommend not taking so many GEs at the risk of getting behind in major coursework. Can you enroll in another instructor's lecture if you really do not want Chase? I specifically remember planning to not take 32A that fall because I was afraid of the instructor who would teach it, but later another lecture opened and I enrolled in that instead. If you're really afraid of Chayes, then try getting into another 32A lecture (spots usually open up as people drop, or the instructor gets the department to open extra spots/accept waitlisted students). If you're a math whiz, then try Chayes.

I'm not an engineering major is what I said. Most spots are closed and I'm a little iffy about waitlists; not well acquainted with it. Our NSA said it was bad idea to be on one. How long till you know you actually got off the waitlist and into the class?

Apologies, misread that. I think you will automatically be moved off the waitlist and be enrolled when a spot opens up. You just check your Study List to see if/when that happens. I would enroll in the 20A and 2xGE for now, and keep checking the schedule of classes for an open spot in 32A, then drop the GE for it. You can also sit in the lectures starting day 1 and see if the instructor opens spots/people drop (so you aren't behind in the class).

    Thanks. I'll probably do that.

Okay I just got enrolled into 32A with WILLIAMS, M.B...amazed I got off the waiting list. Anyone know anything about him; so scared of math one of my worst subjects.
