Unexpected housing assignment change

Mom2jlMom2jl Registered User Posts: 617 Member
My D who is an incoming freshman was assigned back in May to her first choice housing--a double with private bath, located in Sunset Village. Yesterday, she got an email saying that because of too many freshmen and transfers accepting housing contracts, she's been reassigned to a triple with shared bath, also in Sunset Village. Has this happened to anyone else? It seems so late to be notified of a change like this. I really don't understand why they didn't know this sooner. Needless to say, she and I are not happy, but it doesn't seem like there's much recourse.

This would be frustrating to me too.
Try to help your daughter be positive (or at least not negative) about it though. Sometimes triples work out great; and sometimes they are only temporary, as space opens up during the semester.

Many moons ago my sister ended up in a triple her freshman year. When space opened for one of them to move out, they decided to stay together because they all got along so well. Keep an open mind!

And...make sure you get that refund/discount (assuming forced triples are cheaper)!

My daughter has a much better attitude about this than I do, fortunately! The complication for her is that she's on the autism spectrum and more than one roommate might be totally overwhelming for her (even one could be a problem). If she had ended up with a triple room assignment three months ago, we probably would have put together a housing appeal through the student disabilities office to petition for a double or single. As it is now, I'm not sure we have time before school starts. However, this is something that I'm looking into.

And yes, they did already put a refund on her housing bill!

@Mom2jl if you're worried you can still call the housing office and petition based on disability. My friend injured her knee recently and was able to get her housing changed based on disability to a room with private bath because it would be a hassle for her to deal with a cast in a communal bathroom
