What happened to UCLA?

calidancalidan 3031 replies145 threads Senior Member
In the old forums, UCLA had the fifth most posts out of the entire USNEWS top 25 section! Now, in the new forums, UCLA is DEAD LAST! Even behind Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon, and Notre Dame(the bottom three)! What happened? Why isn't anyone interested in UCLA anymore? :(

I know, it seems (at least for the uc's and many other colleges) the activity in the specific college forums is down, so i have to go back to the old forum to read them..

UCLA is still the best dam school in the world!! We dont need to post here just to show it! Just kidding, I too frequently check this forum but noone ever posts here. I do see UCLA questions all over the other boards though. UCLA comes up all all the time so I have to read those posts to make sure noone ever tries to say something dumb about us without any retaliation. In fact, I would say that UCLA is one of the most frequently brought up schools on CC. We should post here more though.

I concur UCLA is hands down best overall UC
best college life, unmatched athletic programs, hot chicks, near everything, best alumni network in los angeles (sorry sc!), and well.. just visit the campus.

    What about the Trojan Network?

  • mexbruinmexbruin 683 replies54 threads Member
the trojan network compared to LA's is sub-par. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. Go to Ernst and Young, KPMG, Price-Waterhouse-Cooper, Boeing etc. and see where all their interns attend? yup all bruins!

ohhhh heeyyy whooaaa ohhhhhh noooooo dont go there...

ever heard of the "bruin network"? no? thats b/c it doesnt exist. ever heard of 'TROJAN NETWORK'? yea? i thought so. no degree has such pull in LA and OC like an SC degree does. my collegues at houlihan lockey howard zukin would concur. so would BOTH of my career mentors. do ucla undergrads have career mentors?

ive heard that twice as more companies recruit at SC than ucla. while i might find this info. a little...sketchy, it came from my cousin....hes ucla anderson mba class of 2006. i think he would concur, too.

ucla has like 25k students while SC has only 15k. you would think with think with 10k more undergrads that a school would have tighter alumni connections.....nope, not the case. yet they spit grads out like none other, every uc does.

ucla is a high volume school and most grads go on to work at high volume firms: ernst, kpmg, price, boeing, even proctorgamble. where do the SC alums go? goldman sachs, delloitte, houlihan, bears stern, and even price and kpmg. the reason why might see more ucla gards working at some firms its b/c they are just so many more ucla alums than usc alums.

heres a practical scenario: my g/f lives in coto de caza, one of the most affluent areas in OC, or in the world for that matter. when i was going to uci, and i told all my g/f neighbors, they were like 'oh thats nice'. when i told them i transferred to SC, they were like my new best friends. every other house on her street houses an SC alum, not bruin. in fact they hate ucla and notre dame, with passion. my girl wants to transfer to cula, but the nieghbors are trying to convince her not to. they would invite me to bbq's to watch SC football at their nice masion estate, play golf, even help with job offers. a couple helped me polish my resume. one guy invited me to his house, and showed me a pic with him and former prez reagan. my g/f's dad is SC alum, also. go to irvine, or newport, or coto, or anywhere elese in affluent OC. note how many 'USC Aumni' liscence plate rings you will see on cars. also note how nice the cars are. then wonder why you dont see any ucla alumni liscence plate rings. and dont try and tell me how it is in OC, i lived here most of my life.

and another: my other cousin graduated SC with 2.7 gpa and had 2 job offers out school. entry level and weak, about 25-30k. his frat hooked him up, too. my sister garduated cum laude form uci, no job offers for 6 months. then she got an entry level position at flour daniel.

mexbruin and all others: dont go off and say, one school is 'sub-par' to another one. that is one hell of a sweeping generalization. i respect and admire ucla very much, though i cant say the same about its ****y and hyped students. notice how i havent said ucla is 'sub-par' to USC. USC is ranked #30 in the nation and is highly regarded by corperate america for a reason. the hype is real, dont you ever forget that.

    hahaha ok Mr. Trojan Man...
Half my graduating class went to USC, I am certainly more familiar with Coto, and I can cite just as many empirical events as you that counter your claims to USC supremacy, so don't give me that crap.
While I don't deny that SC has a better so-called "network" in southern California, UCLA is much, much more well known and respected outside this small part of the world. Basically what I'm saying is that your "practical scenario" doens't mean jack.
Nice try though - look at the bigger picture next time.

well, hmmm, i was trying to focus in on the scope of just so cal...did i not mention or infer that? like a couple times? yes i did. read a little more careful. nice try, though. dont think too hard next time. there is no big picture, or little picture, or any picture at all. i thought my point was pretty clear.

lets face it, cali schools in general dont get the respect they deserve, not even ucla. especially on this board. exceptions are stanford, berkeley, and caltech, myabe more of course. and maybe ucla does get more respect out of socal. but, wait...that wasnt the point. lets get backon track.

a lot of people would like to live here, raise their kids here, work here, retire here. our real estate is getting more expensive. poeple want to come here. and where do practically all the SC alums live? socal, buddy. my dad worked very hard to bring us where we are. and i appreciate socal every bit. thats why im focusing on socal. i, and many many others, would like to stay here.

i just came back from helping my sister with my nephews bday. and i met the neighbors. guess what? hes usc alum. my sis lives off sand canyon, the newer, pricier parts.

but hey im no expert. i could be wrong, i just cant really see how. look im just speaking the truth. this what i have been exposed to. but i never made any such 'claims to USC supremecy'. what is that all about? dont be so crass, changing what i said into what it isnt. i dint mean that. i said our netwroking is better. and you can cite counter arguments? go ahead, make us both incredible. and half of your graduating class went to SC? wow. well, i go to SC. and youre more familiar with coto? great. i practically live there. i have an aunt and an uncle there to. my dad was about move there at one point. basically what im trying to say is...i know what im talking about.

lets not turn this intoa generic usc vs ucla thread. just kill it. the point was made. i know i started this stupidity, dont recipricate it.

i know i started this stupidity, dont recipricate it.

yes you did... hopefully you will see the flaw in saying that the simple fact of holding a degree from USC means that you will make lots of money and live in Coto De Caza (as if everyone wants to live in that blazing desert) or "the pricier parts" of OC. Maybe that's not what you're saying, but it sure as hell seems like it.

MrTrojanMan- Please stop being such a poor representation of Orange County. Using as skewed an environment as Coto in your example proves nothing. Its an extremely controlled environment and its denizens are generally a pretty particular kind of personality.

Oooh! Coto people are proud of you for going to SC?!? I'm shocked!

Please. All of South OC is on the high end of the affluence spectrum, but you wont find that everyone you talk to is for SC. Its...oh, whats that word?..Oh yeah. BALANCED. Because thats reality. Sure, you'll find plenty of SC alums in Coto, Newport, Laguna, etc. But you'll also find plenty of UC grads. This is because both schools are local, and people from both systems have opportunities to do well for themselves.

I dont know what you're talking about with the license plate holders. I see an equal representation of both schools. And dont try to tell me how it is in South OC, because I've lived here ALL my life.

Stop being so petty and stop perpetuating this rivalry crap. Both schools are prestigious and both schools produce capable and well-connected graduates. For someone who went to such a nice school, one would think that you'd be able to drop the pretentious superiority stuff. And people wonder why SC kids are perceived as being shallow, pretentious, snobby, etc.

Oh, and yeah. My mom graduated from freaking CSU Northridge (with the peasants, surely) and now owns several homes in South County. One's school of graduation doesn't dictate their entire lives, stop deluding yourself. Anyone who works hard AFTER college doesnt need to rely on their frat brothers to push them along in life. The easy route (perpetuated, it seems, by money, beer, and football) isn't always the best or the most respectable.

Sidenote- You did, in fact, imply "USC Supremacy". Like, entirely. Your entire tone is pretentious and you seem awfully pre-occupied with one-upping Icarus.

I just thought I'd make that clear before you incorrectly used the word "crass" to scold me for mis-quoting you, or whatever. Cuz, uh, history repeats.

look, let me just get allll the way back to my point: usc has better networking with proud and well-off alums living in well-off places who love to help out. better?

i may have implied 'USC supremacy', i didnt try to or say it. really. i could have implied lots of things, but i may not mean them. satisfied? lets keep in context of what say, not what i imply.

you imply im a 'shallow, pretentious, and snobby' frat guys who likes to drink and watch football with my bros all day while taking the 'easy route in life'. yes/no? that ok, ill let it slide.

really im a nice guy. but somebody on the interent said my school's netwroking is subpar to ucla's. i cant reply without somebody trying to pick an internet fight? mexbruin said it himself: 'i challenege anybody to prove me wrong'. i did. and not 'all their interns' attend ucla, not at those firms.

aww, but Allie, we were having so much fun going back and forth ;) ::rolls eyes::

Anyway, well said Allie - a little friendly rivalry is great (i enjoy giving my USC friends crap even though we're gonna get schooled on December 4th), but Trojanman, you're going way overboard. Stop **** and picking fights just because someone dissed your precious USC.
