Optometry internship

subtle_overlordsubtle_overlord Registered User Posts: 211 Junior Member
Is there anybody who's had an optometry internship/job on or around campus? The student health center currently doesn't have positions open (or at least that's what the website says) and port triton only has one job listing that's unfortunately too far away (I don't have a car). Does anybody know whether on-campus internship opportunities open up when the quarter begins? Has anyone made cold calls to the several clinics around La Jolla? I would ideally like to stay on campus or get paid, but at this point I'm willing to take any incoming opportunities. Any other advice or information is much appreciated.

i think this might be too specific to find on campus.
but, you can try emailing professors or optometrist to see you they need an intern. try the hospitals around campus (scripps, va, etc).
it's probably unlikely that you'll find a paid position, but at this point, experience should go above getting paid.

There are actually positions at student health services, but none are available right now. I was just wondering if they have open spots once the quarter begins.

try volunteering (yes, volunteer.) at the shiley eye center on the east campus. take the east campus shuttle or mesa housing shuttle, 5 min bus ride. eye center is right next to the cancer center and close to thorton hospital and the la jolla institute of allergy & immunology.

Er, I actually do volunteer at the Shiley Eye Center. However my ultimate goal is to get into optometry school, not medical school. My experience at Shiley has mostly been taking care of patients pre and post surgery, but I'm not getting much hands-on clinical experience. In addition, one of the requirements of getting into optometry school is to get a letter of rec from an optometrist you've done an internship for, and the volunteer work at Shiley doesn't include a mentor or employer since I'm mostly working with nurses. Thanks for the advice nevertheless.

well i doubt you'd be able to do much more than what you're doing right now since you probably need a certification to do more...

hit up hmp3 and ask them for help?

a while back i saw ads in the guardian for work in an optometrist's office. but it was receptionist work. so i mean, you can try looking in the newspapers too. try port triton...? and i mean, as others mentioned, you can go to the hospitals/clinics and ask if they have a designated optometry area and talk to an optometrist there.
