My daughter was waitlisted. She definitely wants to stay on and is still very much interested, even coming out of state. We saw somewhere that last year only 14 were admitted off the waitlist? I certainly would trust your info above, but I we are going crazy hearing different info from different people (through this whole application process). Would you also know numbers from this year yet? Will we know that just to get a sense of the possibility of getting in? Thank you!

@COmama24: The wait data I listed was from the UC counselors conference 2019. UCSB will usually list their waitlist data on their common dataset section C2 but not for 2019.

UCSB like all the other UC’s will not publish Waitlist data until after the waitlist is closed so after the May 1 SIR deadline and all admits have been notified and enrolled.

    For 2018 date:
    Waitlist offers: 6650
    Waitlist opt ins: 4000
    Waitlist admits: 960

What the waitlist does not tell you are what majors and the stats of the admitted students.

My recommendation in regards to being waitlisted is consider it a rejection, find another school to get excited about and if you are admitted then it is icing on the cake....

Thanks so much-yes, I think the tears were pretty much that she was "rejected." She will wait for two more schools. She has some other good choices, but also loves Cali, and her top few were there. :) A few more days and it will be over and decisions on her end will be made...

My son was waitlisted at his three of his top school choices; UCSB, UCD and Cal Poly. Is there any reason not to submit to the waitlist at all three?

@macal2020: No reason not to be on multiple waitlists. Just make sure he enrolls somewhere by May 1 since he will probably not hear back till after that deadline for the waitlists.

Any advice on how to write an appeal letter or letter of continued interest?

for info on appeals see http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/appeal
For an appeal to have merit, it must bring to light new information that was not present in the application—information that clearly shows the student to be stronger overall than had been earlier evidenced. Historically, we have admitted very few students on appeal. Appeals received that do not follow the process outlined below will not be considered, so please read the information carefully.

@mspresidenttoyou: UCSB does not consider an applicants level of interest in the admission process so if you want to appeal then state your interest in the appeal letter not a separate letter.

    Some appeal stats from 2019:
    # of appeals submitted: 718
    # of admits: 47

Got off the waitlist last June, write an appeal and be patient. As much as it sucks waiting for months never give up on it! Good Luck!

@Gumbymom Do you get an official rejection letter/communication after May 01. Or do we need to wait until the end date of June 30?

@Gumbymom I see that you can write a "continued interest" letter or an appeal in different places. Is one better than the other? What would your suggestion be for UCSB to give the better chances (I know they aren't great to begin with) Do you just go through the appeal process? Thank you!

@TonyStark748159: You will be notified one way or another regarding your waitlist decision.

@COmama24: You can appeal while on the waitlist, so I would probably do both if you have that option, however, you must have new and compelling information not originally noted on the UC application for the appeal to have validity.

@Gumbymom Thank you so much. I'll have her look into that. Both would go to the same place? She does have some new information and is still very much interested in going, amidst this craziness, out of state. She loved the programs when she visited and spoke to advisers there.

@COmama24: Yes, both waitlist and appeals will be handled by the Undergrad admissions office.

@yyu2002: It really depends if you get your 1st choice major since it will be depend upon what spots are available. Basically no guarantee either way.
