......and no one will probably ever know except the UChicago admissions office, however there is quite a bit of speculation on it.

Logical speculation says that ED 1 would give the best chance but it is only speculation.

Logical speculation says that ED 1 would give the best chance but it is only speculation, and ED1 shouldn't be any worse than ED2. At least I can't think of a reason it would be.

Why? I'm glad you asked. Here is the logic.

    1. ED 1 shows UChicago is your first choice. Above all others. They seem to value that, similar to UPenn.
    2. ED 2 seems to give UChicago first shot at any and all of those deferred from EA to RD at other schools and who still have a decent chance of admittance RD to the other schools (i.e. cherry picking), you would think this would be a very competitive pool.
    3. Anecdotally, some applicants who were deferred EA from UChicago were allowed to change to ED2 and were subsequently admitted.

Really the primary reasons I think ED1 gives a better chance are 1 & 2 above.

For the reasons @CU123 gives, there's a possibility that the ED 2 pool is substantially stronger than the ED 1 pool, or more accurately that the portion of the ED 2 pool that gets serious consideration from the admissions office is substantially stronger than the equivalent portion of the ED 1 pool. If the admissions department expects that, it may want to admit a larger portion of the class from the ED 2 pool than from the ED 1 pool.

It's hard to figure out the game theory without knowing basic things like how many people get accepted ED anything, and how many people apply ED 1 or ED 2. In addition to which, ED 1 and ED 2 were brand new at UChicago last year, so it's completely unlikely that whatever happened last year reflects any kind of stable state of things, or that this year will resemble last year closely.
