My S3 will be applying to Denver this fall. He is very impressed by the education and opportunities his older brother is getting there.

I have another question, seeing that DU is known for its business program and a lot of persons that apply their are business oriented are the other programs they offer kind of sidelined and not given much attention

No, not at all. DU has a lot of wonderful programs and the problem is finding the time and schedule space to fit in everything you are interested in.

My youngest son just completed his EA app to University of Denver. He loved it when he visited his brother there. He had essay trouble too.

Well I have made a lot of progress, just putting on the finishing touches, trying to make the EA deadline.

You'll need to talk to your advisor once you get to campus. Partly it will depend on how many credits you come in with and how heavy a load you are willing to carry each quarter. My son who is a soph at Denver really likes the quarter system, but it can be a rather brutal workload--you can't let up at all because the ten weeks go by so quickly, and getting sick can be a real disaster. Also, check to see if you can set up your schedule so that certain courses can do double duty toward your requirements for each major/minor.

A new problem has arisen , so i read in a guide for applying to college today and it said that I should fill out my applications buy using a typewriter unless specified and i already filled out mine by hand is this going to be a huge problem? I mean the type writer is not really a big thing here unless you are a secretary it's either the computer or by hand.I have made it as legible as possible by doing it in block letters.

    boysx3,
My D just applied EA and has her Hyde Interview in a few weeks. Since you already had a student there is there anything you would want to share with another parent?

    Thanks!

My son's Hyde interview (fall of 2006) was very low stress, more of a conversation is how he described it--it was him and 3 members of an interview panel. He was uncomfortable that one seemed to be writing down everything he said. He didn't know if it was that interviewer's role, or if that was how she remembered candidates, or what...

His regional admissions rep was there to greet him but did not take part in his interview but I don't know if that is always the case.

My son's sense is that the committee was looking to see what each applicant will bring to the community intellectually and even socially...they aren't looking for all the same kind of kid. They need some kids to be active on the dorm level, and some on the campus level, and some in campus clubs, etc so they need all kinds of kids.

Tips? My son told his brother (interviewing in 2 weeks) to be up to date on the news (read Time or US News) and be able to talk about time management as a strength!

    Hi boysx3,
Thanks so much for the sharing the information about your S's interview experience. U of D called D on 11/04 to ask if she had any questions and to confirm her Hyde interview. D was not at home, so I took the opportunity to ask some general questions. The student calling her was quite happy to answer my questions. Even called me Ma'm! I asked questions about the school in general, the co-ed dorms (important to D) and about Greek life - as D may be interested. I even asked (since it was election day), if the students were more liberal or conservative, but the student calling gave a very broad, very vague type of answer - which is probably what they are trained to do!

There are 3 or so kids from D's school that she knows of taking part in November's Hyde interview. All 3 are applying to different majors. I hope all goes well for all of them!

D could only attend U of D if she receives good financial aid. Assuming your S received FA, was it enough to really make a difference?

If you have any other insights to share - please do so.
    Thanks again for your post!

Youngest son had his interview last weekend. He says it went well, they mostly discussed his visit to his older brother on campus--what classes he went to, what professors he talked to,etc. His interview might have been a bit different than most because he didn't really have a lot of questions for the panel because of his brother.

They are quite good to their students. My soph son has found the advising to be very good. He decided to switch out of a straight-business major because he wanted something more college-y and intellectual, but he is still a very project-oriented kid. He spoke with three different advisors to help him figure out what he wanted to do--he is going in to the public policy program, which also is quite strong. They are helping him line up some good interniships and a great study abroad opportunity that will tie in to his interests.
