Chance me on University of Florida

jacksonmmurphy0jacksonmmurphy0 36 replies8 threads Junior Member
GPA weighted: 3.79 / 4.0
- I've taken many IB and AP classes (Mostly A's and B's)
SAT: 1270
Extracurriculars and Activities:
- National Honors Society
- FIRST Robotics Team
- Technology Student Association
- Part-time job (I work about 18 hours a week at a restaurant)
- Community Service (I have volunteered for FIRST Robotics Competitions and in several Prosthetic Engineering companies -- Helping people fit prosthetic limbs and learning during the process)
Essay/letters of rec:
- Pretty strong essay (about my failures of computer engineering and how it shaped me as a person)
- I haven't seen my three letters of recommendation, but I'm pretty sure they're well written.

UF doesn’t accept letters of recommendation. Also what is your UF GPA?

    Weighted:
    4.08

(This is according to that online calculator)

I would consider it a high reach. Your test scores and gpa are both well below the middle 50% for accepted students.

Middle 50% Academic Core GPA: 4.3-4.6

My SAT isn't too far off from the median. The same goes for my weighted GPA (UF Weighted).
I'd say I'm close to the median. I think I'll hope for the best. Hopefully my extracurriculars and college essay are considered as much as my GPA and SAT.

Good luck! You can also google “UF common data set” for more detailed info. I hear the essay is very important!

UF has a holistic process and they look at the whole kid beyond just grades and scores, so no one is a lock and anyone has a chance. That being said, the school is looking for well rounded superstars. They want kids who have the whole package.

I think UF is a reach so be sure to have your safeties lined up. Good luck and let us know what happens in February.

The Common Data Set says, "Percentage of all enrolled, degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who had high school gradepoint averages within each of the following ranges (using 4.0 scale)." was 98% between 3.75-4.0. 1% was between 3.5-3.75.

I take that to mean the unweighted GPA, most likely of the Core Classes.

@jacksonmmurphy0, from what you said above, you would be in that 1%.

Percent who had GPA of 3.75 and higher: 93%

Percent who had GPA of 3.50 and 3.74: 5%

Percent who had GPA of 3.25 and 3.49: 1%

Percent who had GPA of 3.00 and 3.24: .5%

Percent who had GPA of 2.5 and 2.99: .25%

Percent who had GPA of 2.00 and 2.49: .25%

Percent who had GPA of 1.00 and 1.99: 0%

Percent who had GPA below 1.00: 0%

Average high school GPA of all degree-seeking first-time, first-year (freshman) students who submitted GPA:

    4.0-4.4
    (Middle 50%)

I take this information to mean weighted (or the GPA that the student provides) GPA. University of Florida does not necessarily state that these GPAs are weighted or unweighted. And in my case, I reported my weighted GPA of 3.79.

Having a GPA of 3.79 most certainly means I am below the middle 50% of 4.0 - 4.4 GPAs, but not by a hugely considerable amount.

// I probably will be rejected (especially under review for a Computer Science major), but it definitely doesn't hurt to try //

@jacksonmmurphy0 I wouldn't focus too heavily on the unweighted GPA. There's a reason that UF does its own recalculations. The school looks at grades and rigor and they like to reward kids who take harder classes and take more academic classes. No single metric tells the tale, and certainly not unweighted GPA.

Two years ago, my daughter had similar stats and she was offered a program called Gator Engineering at Santa Fe. It is a bridge program, and only kids who listed specific engineering majors (including computer science) are considered for it. UF makes the offers for the program, you don't opt for it.

If they offer it to you, it might be a good option. As you said, one never knows...

@GatorDad305 Thank you for telling me this. It is reassuring that someone with similar stats got accepted for a program like this. I'm glad that they consider the rigor of these classes, because I have been taking all IB and AP classes for the past 3 years, so it should definitely help my case.

@GatorDad305 I will definitely you all know what happens. This could benefit people who have similar stats wondering if they can get in or not.
