I'm out of state going to a competitive public high school, I work hard but don't sit at the top of my class. I am a junior and am expecting to add a few more leadership positions before I apply (will be mentioned). My main question is, do I stand a chance?

GPA - Weighted: 3.88
Class Rank: 18%
Class Size: 473

ACT: 30

Significant Extracurriculars: Boy Scouts (6 years, will have finished Eagle before applications), Venture Crew (3 years), Marching Band (3 years), Pit Orchestra (2 years), Jazz Band (1 year), Multimedia Yearbook (1 year), Mu Alpha Theta

Leadership positions: Senior Patrol Leader (Boy Scouts), Vice President (Venture Crew), Lead Saxophone (Top band class)
Volunteer/Service Work: World Changers (A Christian missions/service trip, 2 trips), A service/missions trip to Brazil

Potential Leadership Positions (during Senior year): Editor in Chief; Multimedia Yearbook, Midvoice Section Leader (Marching Band), Lead Saxophone (Jazz Band)

Awards: (most likely) Commended National Merit Scholar

    If your class rank is reported on your transcript, that can definitely hurt you. Is your GPA calculated UF style? To do this:

    Eliminate all non-academic courses. These don't count. Only English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language count towards your UF GPA. Electives in these subjects do NOT count. (For example, College Writing)

    Use this scale to calculate GPA:

    A=4.0
    B=3.0
    C=2.0
    D=1.0
    F=0.0

    Add .5 for honors and 1 point for AP and IB classes, average it together, and you've got your UF GPA.

    Though your class rank is low, being from OOS can be attractive to them because they need the cash.

    That's a pretty darn good ACT score. Also great EC's.

    I would guess 80% chance.

    Man, SSobick, if your prediction for this guy can somehow be proportional to my stats (3.57 UF GPA and 32 ACT score + disability documentation to explain low GPA caused by freshman year), I'll be very happy right now!
