Any mary washington applicants from class of 09?

This is a small, public LAC in VA that seems to be overlooked too often, maybe because it used to be a women's college and still is ~70% female. I know of a few people applying here as a nice alternative to JMU or Virginia Tech

my D just sent in her application last week. We really liked the school, although we werent too crazy about the food! The lopsided female/male ratio is also a concern. Otherwise, beautiful campus, nice location, and nice school. Would love to hear what others have to say.

I was just offered honors admission to UMW today! It is my second choice for college, right behind UVA. Although UVA is my number 1, I would in NO way be disappointed if I went to UMW. UMW is often overlooked, even by in-state students. It has a lot to offer in terms of academics, has a beautiful, accessible campus, and it seems like the vast majority of UMW students and alumni have plenty of good things to say about the university.
Penny, I've heard several complaints about the food...what did you not like about it? Best of luck to applicants and Happy Holidays everyone!

I think you are right about being overlooked. I think because of the large number of great publics in Virginia, it is overlooked by in-staters, whose needs may be met better by a different school. So many great choices in VA.

I've looked at threads on CC about Virginia colleges, and the discussions get pretty ugly and people are very opinionated.

I looked at UMW as an alternative to St. Mary's in Southern MD. UMW has a lot going for it in terms of location and size. St. Mary's is extremely remote, but more competetive to get into, and 1/2 the size.

I'd like to hear what others think.

wuforward - my d and I really enjoyed our visit to the campus. Everyone was friendly, the campus was beautiful, and the academics seem just right ... the only downsides from my point of view are are female to male ratio and the dining services. The dining hall is divided into 3 or 4 sections and I just felt crowded and awkward trying to find my way around. Also, the food was terrible ... when we went to get slices of bread for our sandwiches, there was mold on the bread ... that didn't do too much for our appetites! The rest of our food was just so-so.

My daughter just heard on December 20th from admissions that she was accepted, she applied the 2nd week of November and we were not expecting to hear until March or April will be playing lacrosse at U of Mary Wash. She was thrilled, we have visited many many campuses and this was her first choice, we visited three times and she also spent the weekend there with some of the lacrosse players. We still can't get over the fact that she already knows where she will be going to college next year. Good luck to everyone !!!

Penny, if it's any help, the food was not too great when I was student at UMW many, many years ago! Aside from that, I did receive a nice education -- and several of my students also have gone on to do well at the school.

I applied to Mary Washington as well and have still not heard back. I'm not from anywhere near Virginia but was drawn by their historical preservation program. :D

UMW is pretty solid. I am a freshman at Rutgers but looked at a bunch of schools in HS, UMW being one of them. I thought I wouldn't like UMW because it has a reputation on a suitcase college and it is close to my father in Virginia(I live in NJ). Well I was wrong, because I plan on transferring to either UMW, F&M, or JMU by next fall. I admire a lib. arts school, and UMW is a great public one that is very overlooked.
