This year's application

Is it online anywhere (can you see essays without actually starting application?). Also is it rolling or EA (is there a benefit to getting it in early before the deadline) AND is there a separate application for the business school....silly questions but can't answer without seeing the app...any other advice much appreciated!

The app should be out soon - usually comes out in August. No, you can't preview, but once you create an account, you can sign in and out as often as you want to make corrections before you actually submit it. They don't see anything but the final product that you submit, so no worries.

The app includes 10 short answer (like a few word responses) questions and two moderate sized essays (I seem to remember they were around 300 words?). I don't know if the prompts will be the same this year or if they will change. They do ask you to include an activities resume, so you can work on that in the interim.

NOVEMBER 1st is the only deadline you should consider when applying to Maryland. They do NOT have rolling admissions, early action or early decision (binding). Instead, they have two deadlines: Nov 1 for priority applications, and Jan 20 for regular applications. However, the large majority of the freshman class is chosen from the priority applications, so you tremendously increase your chance of getting in by applying priority. Priority applications are NOT binding, but only those who apply priority are eligible for merit scholarships and special programs like honors and scholars. If you apply regular admission, you are not eligible for those things regardless of how impressive your stats are. So, you really should apply by November 1st and I cannot stress the importance of that enough.

There is not a separate app for the business school, which is one of the LEP (limited enrollment program) majors. You are considered for general acceptance for the University first, and if accepted, then your app goes to the LEP for review. Since they only take a limited number of students (thus the term LEP), making it more competitive, so you may or may not be accepted by the LEP of your choice. When you get your decision (very, very end of January), you will know from the acceptance letter - based on the wording and notation of which college you are in. If it says Letters and Sciences, that means you were accepted to the University but not your LEP. No reason to lose hope though, because once you attend and prove yourself with college level courses, you can reapply to the LEP of your choice as an in-school transfer.

    Hope this helps.

I just created a freshmen application; I do not see where any essays are required. Am I missing something or is this a change for the 2013 application year?

Unfortunately, without creating a new account, it's not possible to access this year's application to answer whether or not it has changed from last year...
Did you scroll through all the pages/questions? Last year, there was a prompt to upload a document in response to a question (you choose which question, and I seem to remember you had to choose two -some questions were really obtuse, but one could be a question you write yourself), it came before the prompt to upload an activities resume, which was right before short questions.

I did create a new account. I cannot find the essays. I emailed admissions at Maryland early this afternoon; I have not heard back.

    We'll see...shouldn't be so hard!

When you go into the application, it's the link on the left (in the red box) that says Freshman Essay and Activities Statement (or something like that).

Here are the links to the left of the Freshmen Application I created:

    Application for Admission
    Educational Intent
    Personal Information
    Contact Information
    Family Information
    Application Information
    Honor Statement
    Test Scores
    Signature

That's it. I have clicked on each to see if the essays are in there...nope.

Still have not heard from Maryland.

Freshman Essay and activities statement appears after Test Scores and the short answer questions. It gives you a choice of 5 different topics and you choose 2 of them. Limit of 300 words per essay. One of the choices is "write your own question and respond to it". There is 10 short answer questions too.

This is what shows up on my child's application. He had to print it out to work on the essays and short answer questions. Hope this helps.

The prompts do not appear after test scores and I still have not heard back from Maryland. I would appreciate it if anyone who has the short answers and essay prompts. cutting and pasting them into the reply box and posting it on CC.

    thanks
