Commonwealth College

Would the letter in the package they've sent out indicate if you were accepted? Mine said nothing about it, and I hate to sound cocky but I was fully expecting to get into CC. Would anybody who got in mind sharing their stats?

well mine said that i got into commonwealth on the application status check website right below where it said i had been accepted.

    I had a 1440 Sat1 and a 91/100 on Indian boards.
The crietria i think is more then 1300 Sat and a 3.5 GPA or something like that.

    Dear SZ062,
Great gpa and SAT's, but I was under the impression that you must have at least a 1350,and be in the top 10% of your class to qualify. Did they automatically place you in commonwealth or did you call to inquire about it?

What are the benefits to the Commonwealth College? Are the dorms better? Chances for scholarships/interships better? Or is it the pizza with the profs? Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm in CC, and to be honest being in it isn't really that special. There really aren't any special dorms for people in CC just some learning communities in a dorm that is up a steep hill. There are scholarships for people in CC that you can apply for as well. I'm not sure about the internships I guess it depends what field your looking into. Pizza with profs is alright, I went to one. Not many professors that intrest me though (I'm a sport management major) as they are mainly from humanities and sciences backgrounds.

IMO, there really isn't any incentive to be in Commonwealth College for my major at least just because of all the extra work you have to do to add another line on your degree. I wish they had more incentives like other Honors Colleges around the U.S. do like priority registration and better housing. Check out UMass Amherst: Commonwealth College the Honors College at UMass Amherst or PM me if you have any other questions.

I'm trying to choose between Commonwealth and Smith College, and having a really hard time finding legitimate information on the merit of Commonwealth.

If anyone else is in the same boat of choosing between Commonwealth and somewhere else, or if anyone has any information to share about Commonwealth, I'd be...wicked grateful.

    Commonwealth is apparently really reputable.

congratulations to everyone who has been accepted to CC at U Mass Amherst! My D has also been accepted early and is deciding. She has 3.7 GPA, 750 math 650 eng. SAT. and she was surprised to get in...we thought the standards were very high. She wants to travel and tuition is so high at other schools, this seems like the best option. (she's our 4th so we learned the hard way paying Bentley and Syracuse) She hasn't visited yet though.

i dont think commonwealth college is that special to begin with, not surprised to get into it anyway

i read some of the forums on here from students who actually are in it, not parents or newspapers, and they say its not that different

I got into it but I heard that they had about twice as many applicants as they expected, so a lot of people who should've gotten into Commonwealth College didn't

I got $1000 a year and Abigail Adams scholarship
    Mathematics major (female)
    about 3.7 ish GPA
    1510/1600 (800 on math)
oodles of ECs including about 1000 hours of volunteering to teach karate to preschoolers and a black belt plus varsity tennis for four years, 1st chair oboe, 13 years of girl scouts and captain of the math team

I'm a senior graduating from UMass w/in ComCol and I've loved the education I've received here, but to be quite frank, ComCol is a waste of time. They are terrible at any sort of administrative duties, they just want to get incoming freshmen involved to make themselves look better and there's really no difference between being a member vs. just being part of the university as a whole. No special treatment from prof's, and the ComCol classes you do take will be full of the type of student who loves the sound of their own voice and who's just looking for resume boosters. My advice: join only if they are offering you some sort of financial support. You can still graduate with latin honors without being in ComCol.
