What does U of Michigan think about suspensions?

punipenorpunipenor 16 replies1 threads New Member
Specifically, I have been suspended in my sophomore year for theft in the locker rooms. an someone tell me how this will affect my chances? Thank you.

If anyone has any tips on writing the explanation, please feel free to comment. One thing I have a question about is: how long should the explanation be? I want to let them know that I really regret what I did, and that it was a really bad mistake, but I don't know how in-depth I should go. (word count?)

Thanks a lot!

I was suspended multiple times in grade 9-10 and gave no explanation, cause I didn't think it was any of their business. I also wasn't sorry for it in the least. They either didn't notice or didn't care. If you have an arrest record that's gonna carry a lot more weight, as we saw with that football player who got denied.

Thank you so much for the reply! It makes me feel more confident about my situation.
& really? On the CommonApp, it requires that you upload a document to explain your suspension. I checked "yes" for the question that asks if I have ever been suspended from school. My guidance counselor is putting it on the recommendation too, but he only mentioned it very lightly.

And idk why the football player got denied, because on the CommonApp, it states that you don't have to answer "yes" to the question about "Have you ever been adjudicated guilty or convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, or other crime?" provided that "the criminal adjudication or conviction has been expunged, sealed, annulled, pardoned, destroyed, erased, impounded, or otherwise ordered by a court to be kept confidential."

My document was blank iirc. The player was denied cause it was well known his case was tossed out of court only due to his being a football player in Florida. He was a repeat criminal and a liability to have around campus, was likely how they saw it.
